An Oregon man is facing hate crime charges after authorities say he threatened to cut the head off of a female police sergeant during an expletive-laden tirade earlier this month.

A female Oregon State Police sergeant suffered the racist attack as she took local man Jimmy Joe James Jr. into custody on various drug-related charges, local station KOIN 6 reported. During his arrest, James reportedly began making offensive remarks about the trooper’s race and gender, calling her the n-word and the c-word, officials said.

At one point, the man threatened to kill the officer by cutting off her head. When the sergeant asked James if he was threatening her, he replied, “Yes, I’m threatening you.”

James is now charged with harassment and 2nd-degree intimidation, which is considered a hate crime, according to the station. He’s currently being held on $40,000 bail.

He also faces a parole violation originating from prior weapons charges, for which bail isn’t being offered.

James has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
