While “Black Panther” star Chadwick Boseman recently disclosed that Denzel Washington had paid for him to go to study theatre at Oxford University, the duo didn’t meet until after the fact. And when they finally did, the veteran actor had jokes!

“The first thing he said was, ‘You owe me money!'” Boseman recalls Washington telling him. “It was so deep I can’t even go into it right now because we just sorta [were] just talking about what’s been happening, what’s about to happen. Some things that he can only say.”

He added that while he initially wanted to stay behind the camera, Washington noted that he can still be in front of it at the same time.

“[That’s] part of what he said: giving is the most selfish thing you will ever do,” Boseman says.

Boseman had been studying at Howard University when he had the opportunity to study at Oxford. Not having any money to attend, his professor, actress Phylicia Rashad, got a few of her friends to pitch in. Boseman later found out that Washington funded his trip, as he told Jimmy Fallon on “The Tonight Show” Thursday, Feb. 28.

The actor had initially divulged the secret in his Rolling Stone cover story but had promised not to mention it until after he met Washington in person. Thanks to the timing of the “Black Panther” movie premiere and the magazine’s release, he was able to live up to that notion.

Online, fans ate up the charitable moment.
