During a heated debate with comedienne Chelsea Handler over the weekend, conservative agitator Tomi Lahren confessed she still benefits from a popular proponent of Obamacare after publicly criticizing the landmark health care law.
Lahren and Handler faced off at nonpartisan political event “Politicon” in Pasadena, Calif., on Saturday, July 29, where their conversation turned toward the Affordable Care Act, Fortune magazine reported. Lahren, an avid Trump supporter, blasted the ACA and told Handler that while she believes it’s her right to purchase health care, she doesn’t feel its her right to pay for it for other people.
“We need to find alternatives — what we have now is not working,” the 24-year-old said. “What we had before Obamacare wasn’t working.”
Lahren continued to argue against the law but later admitted she was still on her parents’ health insurance plan, thanks to Obamacare.
“Do you have a health care plan or no?” Handler asked Lahren.
“Well luckily, I’m 24, so I am still on my parents’ [plan]” Lahren answered, to which the audience erupted in deafening laughter and cheers, according to Fortune.
Handler quickly hushed the crowd, saying, “Stop, stop, stop, she’s being honest.”
A key provision of the Affordable Care Act allows for a person to stay on their parents’ plan until age 26. Before its passage in 2010, the cut-off age was 19, or 22 for full-time college students, the magazine reported.
The former commentator’s remarks come as Senate Republicans struggle to repeal and replace the former president’s health care law. Critics were quick to slam Lahren for her statements, taking to social media to highlight her hypocrisy.
Best part of #Politicon2017: finding out Tomi Lahren is 24 and still on her parents insurance because of #Obamacare 😂
