Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, South African anti-apartheid veteran and former wife of the late Nelson Mandela, was admitted to a hospital for observation Thursday, March 9, a statement from her family said.
“Mandela went to the hospital for a routine medical checkup on Wednesday, March 8. A decision was taken to admit her for further observation,” the statement reads.
Madikizela-Mandela, 80, was in the hospital for several weeks last year for back surgery.
During nelson Mandela’s 27-year incarceration for his fight against apartheid, the former first lady campaigned vigorously for his release and for the rights of Black south Africans in detention, banished or arrested.
