In an Oct. 10 interview with Yahoo Global News Anchor Katie Couric, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg weighs in on San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick’s national anthem protest.
The liberal stalwart says Kaepernick’s protest is not illegal, but it is arrogant and stupid. Her statements come as a surprise because of her track record. For over a month, Kaepernick’s protest has dominated the national spotlight despite its detractors. Athletes on all levels and across all sports have joined him in an attempt to bring awareness to police brutality. Many have taken a knee, raised a fist, or have taken a seat.
However, Ginsburg does not see it that way. She believes his protest is similar to flag burning seen in other protests.
“I think it’s dumb and disrespectful. I would have the same answer if you asked me about flag burning. I think it’s a terrible thing to do, but I wouldn’t lock a person up for doing it … If they want to be arrogant, there’s no law that prevents them from that. What I would do is strongly take issue with the point of view that they are expressing when they do that.”
