Niece of Indianapolis Homeowner Shot by Police After Reporting Robbery Furious at Lack of Warning

On Aug. 23, an Indianapolis, Indiana homeowner was accidentally shot by police after his wife reported a robbery at their residence around 4 a.m.

According to CBS 4, 48-year-old Carl Williams was shot in the stomach immediately after Indianapolis Metropolitan Police arrived on the scene.

In the 911 call, Williams’ wife said she was held at gunpoint during a carjacking.

At the time, the woman said that a Black male with a long gun, baseball cap and a red and white jacket tried to steal her car.

But Williams investigated the matter before police arrived. After his wife was held at gunpoint, Williams went outside with a weapon to confront the carjacker.

At the end of the call, Williams can be heard saying, “Oh wait, is that him? Is that him?”

When police responded to the 911 call, they shot Williams coming out of the garage.

CBS 4 reports that Williams allegedly matched the description of the suspect.

However, Williams’ niece, Kamaria Howard, tells reporters in the news clip that officers gave no warning and fired at her uncle.

“If they were confused, they should have not shot him, ” Howard exclaims. “When my uncle opened up the garage… [The officers] immediately shot him. There was no warning. There was no anything … Black men on the news are consistently getting shot and this can’t continue to happen.”

Williams is being treated at IU Health Methodist Hospital and expects to survive his injuries.

The officer involved has been identified as 9-year veteran Christopher Mills. He will be placed on administrative leave during the investigation of the incident.
