Actor Will Smith admitted he and his wife Jada Pinkett Smith have sought help to get their marriage on track. The 47-year-old revealed he and his 44-year-old wife exposed themselves in counseling to get on the same page.
“I’ve done a lot of marriage counseling,” he told the United Kingdom’s The Sun. “What happens in a marriage once you do counseling, the truth comes out.”
“And you sit across from your wife and you’ve said all of your truth and she has said all of her truth. You look at each other and you can’t imagine you could ever possibly love each other again now the truth is out.”
Smith acknowledged so much personal exposure has uncovered some tough moments.
But it was worth it to get closer to his spouse.
“It creates a dark moment. But for me it’s the dark before the dawn,” he said. “When the truth comes out and people have to say who they are and what they think, you get to know who they are.”
“I think that’s the cleansing before you get to the other side that is understanding and moving forward in our relationship.”
The “Suicide Squad” star has been plagued with many rumors throughout his 19-year marriage to the actress. There have been speculations that the two are in an open marriage. Pinkett Smith’s comments three years ago seemed to confirm the report.
She told The Huffington Post in 2013 she did not believe marriage was easy.
“I’ve always told Will, ‘You can do whatever you want as long as you can look at yourself in the mirror and be okay,’ ” she said. “Because at the end of the day, Will is his own man. I’m here as his partner, but he is his own man. He has to decide who he wants to be and that’s not for me to do for him. Or vice versa.”
