Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump tried to court Black voters at a West Bend, Wisconsin rally on Wednesday, Aug. 16.
In the 2-minute clip, Trump’s speech centers on the unrest in Milwaukee prompted by the shooting of Sylville Smith during a traffic stop.
He uses the unrest to pin the plight of Black people on the Democratic Party.
However, his attempt to rally Black people felt disingenuous. Since the Republican National Convention, the Trump campaign has struggled to rally African-American support.
According to a July NBC News-Wall Street Journal-Marist poll, Trump polled at 6 percent with Black voters.
Moreover, he tells a crowd of mostly white supporters that the “Democratic Party has failed and betrayed the African-American community.”
The Republican nominee adds that Clinton does not take responsibility for her previous transgressions — the 1994 crime bill responsible for mass incarceration.
However, he goes on the offensive once more by condemning the Democrats for the current disarray in the nation.
“They have fostered the dangerous anti-police atmosphere in America [and] do a direct disservice to poor African-American residents who are hurt by the high crime in their communities,” Trump states in the speech.
