On yesterday’s CNN Newsroom, journalist Don Lemon gets personal when discussing the shootings of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile.
In the nearly 2-minute clip, Lemon reveals details of his sometimes demeaning interactions with cops. He says that he has to say “sir, ” “yes,” and “no” to “stay alive.”
The journalist says that he cannot speak to police like his white counterparts can, who tend to be speaking as equals.
Lemon says that he has to be overly nice to survive the encounter even though he does nothing wrong.
