A Chicago Police officer has been relieved of his duties after he was caught on video stomping a Black man’s face into the ground while another officer attempted to make an arrest in North Lawndale.
According to CBS Chicago, the Independent Police Review Authority (IPRA) has also launched an investigation into the officers involved in the video for the alleged police brutality.
In the nearly 2-minute clip, bystanders watched in shock as a plain-clothes officer struggles to arrest the man.
Viewers can hear him commanding the suspect to not “f—ing bite me.”
The officer desperately calls for backup. Then another white officer comes over to push back the growing crowd. He then yells obscenities at the crowd before intervening.
The profanity-laced video shows the second officer stomping on the head of the suspect.
Members in the crowd encouraged the man who was filming to continue to do so. Viewers can even hear someone say get the officers tag number.
“After careful consideration and reviewing the video footage, Superintendent (Eddie) Johnson has decided to relieve one of the officers involved in the incident that occurred on the 3900 block of West Grenshaw of his police powers while IPRA investigates the case,” police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said in a statement.
The names of the officers involved have not been released.
However, the Chicago Tribune reports that two officers were taken to the Rush University Medical Center for treatment following the incident.
