Juneteenth Atlanta Parade and Music Festival, June 17-19 – Atlanta, Georgia
Atlanta’s Juneteenth festival celebrates the heritage and culture of African-Americans as it commemorates the emancipation of enslaved Africans in 1865. Beautifully decorated floats are a staple of the festival’s parade, which also features dance groups and marching bands. Other Juneteenth festivals are held in Houston (June 18); Philadelphia (June 18); Denver (June 18); Columbus, Ohio (June 17-19); and Memphis, Tennessee (June 16-19).
Austin African American Book Festival, June 25 – Austin, Texas
The annual African-American Book Festival is held at the George Washington Carver Museum and Cultural Center. It promotes reading, writing and literature in the Black community. It also focuses on authors and cultural leaders influenced by African works. Events include keynote speeches, author interviews and local writer showcases.
