John Legend, Joe Morton Discuss Dick Gregory and Play Based on His Life: ‘He Turned Down $17M to Fight for Black Rights’

Actor Joe Morton and musician John Legend appeared on NBC’s TODAY Show to talk about the career of comedian and activist Dick Gregory and the new off-Broadway show “Turn Me Loose.”

Produced by John Legend and starring Joe Morton, the play focuses on the racial trials and tribulations Gregory endured as he rose to prominence in the comedy world.

Legend said he came on board as a producer because he was interested in Gregory’s story.

Morton tells hosts that Gregory was making $17 a week and then went to making $17 million as a comic. He gave all of that up after breaking down color barriers on TV and meeting Medgar Evers, who inspired him to become an activist.
