The Obama administration announced Thursday that they will send a letter instructing all public schools to allow students to use the bathroom consistent with their gender identity.
Because of Title IX, schools should not require a medical diagnosis, nor should they demand any documentation reflecting the student’s gender identity before taking steps to protect transgender students. States that don’t comply could lose federal funding. The mandate comes amid the administration’s legal fight over North Carolina’s new bathroom law, CBS This Morning reports.
North Carolina’s law states that transgender people should use the bathroom according to the gender printed on their birth certificate.
