The first full trailer for actress’ Lupita Nyong’o next project, Queen of Katwe, has been released today.
Based off the book The Queen of Katwe: A Story of Life, Chess, and One Extraordinary Girl’s Dream of Becoming a Grandmaster by author Tim Crothers, the film will depict the rise of Ugandan chess prodigy Phiona Mutesi.
The film’s synopsis states:
“For 10-year-old Phiona Mutesi (Madina Nalwanga) and her family, life in the impoverished slum of Katwe in Kampala, Uganda, is a constant struggle. Her mother, Harriet (Nyong’o), is fiercely determined to take care of her family and works tirelessly selling vegetables in the market to make sure her children are fed and have a roof over their heads. When Phiona meets Robert Katende (David Oyelowo), a soccer player turned missionary who teaches local children chess, she is captivated.”
Queen of Katwe was directed by Mira Nair and written by William Wheeler.
Moviegoers will be able to see Mutesi’s story September 23 in the USA.
