In an April 21 WYFF newscast, Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright can be heard comparing the NAACP to the infamous Klu Klux Klan, a hate group. Wright made the controversial comments during a Greenville-Spartanburg Republican Women’s meeting on April 7. He deemed the organization racist because it primarily focuses on the rights of Black Americans.
“I think the most racist people in America right now sometimes are minorities, small group minorities,” Wright said. “He acknowledged the KKK as a racist group as well and says he doesn’t support any organization that “doesn’t respect you just because of whatever color God made you.”
Russell Lynch, an independent running against Wright for sheriff, called Wright’s comments an embarrassment to law enforcement. Wright later backtracked told the news station that Spartanburg’s NAACP chapter “tries to help everybody.”
