In a series of nearly 150 Tweets, celebrities and regular users alike were captivated by this epic (and sometimes disturbing) saga of drugs, kidnapping and prostitution.  Stars like Missy Elliot and Ava Duvernay tweeted about the drama as it unfolded, actress KeKe Palmer even stated her desire to play the part of Zola in a feature film.

When Abby Fisher filed suit in 2013 charging the University of Texas with discrimination for admitting Black students when she was denied, she sparked a national debate on affirmative action, including an article that ran this year in For Harriet entitled, “Abigail Fisher, Please Stop Blaming People of Color for Your Mediocrity.”  The case went to the Supreme Court this year, and prompted Black college graduates from Texas and other colleges and universities to post pictures in their caps and gowns with the hashtag #StayMadAbby, reaffirming the notion that Black excellence is not given, but earned through hard work and diligence.
