16 Most Memorable Black Twitter Moments of 2015

#AllLionsMatter

When Cecil the lion was killed and there was a large cry throughout social media of “justice for Cecil,” as well as proposed legislation, Black Twitter responded to the hypocrisy by acknowledging how the overwhelming support for the life of Cecil was not given to the lives of Black men and women who were being killed by police and others due to racism.  Memes and videos circulated suggesting that if Black people disguised themselves as lions, their lives would matter.

#CivilRightsTwitter

Yes, we know Twitter wasn’t around in the 1960s during the civil rights movement, but suppose it was? Black Twitter got really creative imaging what Tweets in that era would look like. Whether the message was to convince folks to “stay woke,” or to resurrect old beefs, #CivilRightsTwitter was as entertaining as it was imaginative.

These 16 hashtags, made popular by Black Twitter in 2015, are not definitive, nor is it an exhaustive list.  Hashtags like #PopeBars, #MelaninOnFleek, #DabOnThemFolks, and #GrowingUpBlack were also quite popular in 2015, which only goes to show that whether the issue is one of serious concern, irony, shared cultural experience or pure comedy, Black Twitter has solidified its place in American popular culture as a force to be reckoned with.  If 2016 is anything like 2015, Black Twitter surely will not disappoint.
