7 Shameful Examples of Concentration Camps Created for Black People

Post-Civil War Concentration Camps of the U.S. After the Civil War (and during the war), millions of freed Black people were funneled into concentration camps near Union army bases where conditions were unsanitary and food was limited. Many were killed through forced starvation, and other means. The most notorious of these instances took place in Nachez, Mississippi, also referred to as the Devil’s Punchbowl. The death camp was established after freed Black individuals fled to Natchez after being emancipated. “When the slaves were released from the plantations during the occupation they overran Natchez," says researcher Paula Westbrook. "The population went from about 10,000 to 120,000 overnight.” Here, tens of thousands of freed Blacks were subjected to horrendous conditions that led to their death. In the end, roughly 20,000 Black men, women and children were killed. Aboriginal Concentration Camps As a means to “exterminate” the Aboriginal population, the Australian enacted the Aborigines Protection Act of 1909. Under the act, the first Australian concentration camps were established. Dr. Gary Foley, an Australian Aboriginal Gumbaynggir activist, academic, writer and actor, conveyed that the act was established “on the assumption that what was left of the Aboriginal populace would now die. Black Labor Camps During the Anglo-Boer War While the two main forces in the Anglo-Boer War were white, Blacks suffered most of the casualties during the war. At least 15,000 Blacks were used as combatants and non-combatants by the British. As a result of the British "scorched earth policy" many Blacks who lived on white farms were moved to concentration camps. In addition, displaced and captured civilians were rounded up by the British forces and forced into "refugee camps," which soon became known as concentration camps. The British forced the Blacks into camps, namely to make them work, either to grow crops for the troops or to dig trenches, be wagon drivers or work as miners once the gold mines became partly operational again, according to sahistory.org.za. The Herero and Namaqua Genocide and Shark Island After the Herero and Namaqua people rebelled against German imperialism in South-West Africa, or modern-day Namibia, German imperialists placed thousands of Namibians into concentration camps. The worst of these camps was that of Shark Island, or “Death Island,” off the coast of Lüderitz, Namibia. Those sent to Shark Island were solely placed there to die. This is considered by many historians to be the the first genocide of the 20th century. Between 1904 and 1908, 100,000 Herero and 10,000 Nama people lost their lives. Tarrafal Camp of Cape Verde Tarrafal Camp, also known as the “Camp of the Slow Death” was initially developed as a means to punish communists, anarchists, anti-colonialists, liberals, and any opposers of Antonio de Oliveira Salazar's regime. Yet, in the 1970s it re-opened to “ imprison African leaders who were fighting the Portuguese for independence. The camp was the means by which the Portuguese stepped up the oppression of African captives. Many of the techniques utilized to torture African captives were inspired by the Nazi's, as well as the oppressive practices of chattel enslavement. The Mau Mau Uprising and Concentration Camps in Kenya The Mau Mau Rebellion was a response to British colonialism. Between the 1954 and 1960, the Mau Mau Revolt helped to solidify Kenyan independence. It also brought about dreadful fates for those who were involved. For six years, British colonists established prison camps to punish Mau Mau suspects. To this day, Britain has done little to acknowledge its crime in Kenya, including the infamous Hola deaths in which “detainees at Hola detention camp were clubbed to death by prison warders after they refused to work,” according to an article published by The Telegraph. Blacks During the German Holocaust An article released by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum confirms that “the fate of black people from 1933 to 1945 in Nazi Germany and in German-occupied territories ranged from isolation to persecution, sterilization, medical experimentation, incarceration, brutality, and murder.” As a result, they often found themselves in concentration camps. In fact, Black Americans were also “captured by the Nazis and were interned in concentrations camps,” according to an article published by NewsOne.
