5 Important Things You Should Know About #DanielHoltzclaw, The Cop Who Assaulted 13 Black Women

AP Photo/Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office Daniel Holtzclaw, 28, was an Oklahoma City police officer who allegedly sexually assaulted 13 women between December 2013 and June 2014 while on duty. Holtzclaw was charged in August 2014 and fired from the OKC police department in January 2015. He has pleaded not guilty to three dozen charges. Eight white men and four white women will serve on the jury for Daniel Holtzclaw. One male and one female have been selected as alternates. Three Black men were eliminated as potential jurors. The trial began on Monday but received little media coverage, sparking outrage on social media. Many people did not know about this case, or the events surrounding it, since charges were filed last year. Here are 5 things you should know about the case: All of the Victims Are Black Women Each of the 13 victims are Black. The assaults occurred over a period of months and involved women ages 17 into their 50s. Holtzclaw is accused of targeting Black women while patrolling the northeast side of Oklahoma City until the boundaries of his precinct changed to include the northwest part of the city, where other victims alleged to have been assaulted by him. Prosecutors claim Holtzclaw would approach or stop Black women and run their names to see if they had records or outstanding warrants. He assaulted women he believed would not report him to authorities and comply to evade arrest. Holtzclaw, 28, was arrested in August 2014 after a victim, identified as J.L., reported her assault in person at the local police station. The resulting investigation uncovered similarities to unsolved assault reports by a police officer in the area. Holtzclaw Is Facing 36 Criminal Charges One victim's allegations, identified in court documents as T.B., make up five of the 36 counts against Holtzclaw. She was allegedly confronted by Holtzclaw while parked in front of her house. After running her name and discovering warrants, he returned to her car informing her of the warrants and asking if she had any drugs in the house. He told her he needed to “check her for any drugs” and instructed her to lift up her shirt, and proceeded to touch her bare breasts. Prosecutors claim GPS records show that Holtzclaw returned to the house multiple times and in once instance broke into the victim's house, and told T.B's boyfriend to go outside, where he ran his name for warrants. During their investigation, a victim told detectives that Holtzclaw approached her while she was walking down the street. She was then placed into his squad car and driven to N.E. 24th Street where he told her to perform oral sex. Police received a similar report a month apart, by a woman who said an officer forced her to perform oral sex during a traffic stop on NE 50th Street. Other counts against Holtzclaw include second-degree rape by instrumentation, sexual battery, forcible oral sodomy, burglary, stalking, indecent exposure and procuring lewd exhibition. He Twice Violated the Conditions of His Bond On September 3, a judge reduced Holtzclaw's bond from $5 million to $500,000. Six days later, Holtzclaw left jail after paying a $500,000 bond. However, in mid-September, he violated the conditions of his bail by not notifying the bond release program case manager before going to a doctors appointment. Oklahoma County District Judge Timothy Henderson gave Holtzclaw a 14-day sentence as a sanction for violating conditions of his release and increased his bond to $609,000. Holtzclaw violated the conditions of his bond a second time in July. According to court documents, Holtzclaw allowed his GPS bracelet battery to go dead for about six and a half hours, from just after midnight to 7 a.m. An Oklahoma judge sentenced him to 15 days in jail, where he has remained since the violation. 'Justice for Daniel Holtzclaw' GoFundMe Raised Over $7,000 The GoFundMe campaign “Justice for Daniel Holtzclaw” had raised $7,390 in nine days following his initial arrest. The campaign, set up my Holtzclaw's sister, was seeking legal funds for Daniel Holtzclaw. Nearly 40 people donated to the crowdsource campaign before GoFundMe shut it down in he face of growing criticism. "GoFundMe is home to millions of individual fundraising campaigns that have raised over $430M. In the event that a campaign receives a high volume of complaints, GoFundMe will conduct an internal content review to determine the most appropriate course of action. Given the sheer volume of campaigns, each review is handled on a case-by-case basis. In this particular case, GoFundMe determined that the fundraising campaign titled 'Justice for Daniel Holtzclaw' will be removed from the site. "As GoFundMe's growth and popularity surges, the company will continue to refine and improve its content review process to ensure a positive experience for all visitors." Two Civil Suits Have Been Filed Against Holtzclaw Two women have filed separate civil suits against Oklahoma City and Holtzclaw. Demetria Campbell claims that as she walked out of a restaurant, Holtzclaw slammed her into the the side of the building without provocation. "He then slammed her face and head against the brick wall and pressed his crotch area against her backside while exhibiting an obvious erection," the complaint states. Campbell said he accused her fitting the description of a car thief. He then placed her into his patrol car and drove her around before finally releasing her without charges. Campbell immediately went to the emergency room, where a nurse demanded to see a police supervisor who apologized for the episode. The second woman, Shandegreon Hill, says she was assaulted in an empty room at South West Medical Center. She is suing the city for knowing about Holtzclaw's "pattern and practice of committing rape, sexual assaults, battery and intimidation against certain citizens under the protection of the city through the misuse of his position."
