Mumia Abu-Jamal is a former Black Panther, activist, author and radio journalist who has been in prison since 1982 for allegedly murdering Daniel Faulkner, a Philadelphia police officer. Many believe that he was wrongly convicted due to the trial’s faulty nature and lack of evidence. According to an article published by the Asbury Park Press, Marilyn Zuniga, a third-grade teacher at Forest Street Elementary School in Orange, New Jersey was fired because she had her class write “get well” letters to the convicted inmate. Puterman writes that “[Mumia] was recently admitted to a Pennsylvania hospital after suffering complications from diabetes. He was since been released and remains incarcerated at SCI Mahoney in Frackville, Pennsylvania.” Zuniga’s vilification commenced after her following tweet, which has since been removed: “Just dropped off these letters to comrade Johanna Fernandez. My 3rd graders wrote to Mumia to lift up his spirits as he is ill. #freemumia.”
11 Atlanta Teachers and School Administrators
Brittney Cooper, a contributing writer for Salon Media Group, Inc., reports that “an Atlanta jury convicted 11 teachers and school administrators of racketeering in a system-wide cheating scandal.” She writes, “I don’t have to condone cheating in any form (and I don’t) to assert that what has happened in Atlanta to these teachers is a travesty.” She adds, “scapegoating Black teachers for failing in a system that is designed for Black children, in particular, not to succeed is the real corruption here.” In fact, many individuals have agreed with Cooper’s views regarding this trial.
