The Taraji P. Henson character, “Cookie,” while seemingly universally embraced by most in the Black community because she’s determined and authentic, still rings slightly exaggerated, even as we know those women do exist. For the purposes of this show, she’s the only real comic relief, but her lack of nurturing her kids and pitting them against each other at times is totally opposite of the Black mother creed. And there is hardly a scene where she is not frowning, rocking her neck and spewing angry, malicious venom. Seen that tired act too many times. According to ClassyBlackWomen.com: “While Black people are out on the streets screaming that Black lives matter, many still seem oblivious to how the Black IMAGES we see and support every day in media can affect how we’re treated by and in society. ”
