10 Most Successful Black Companies in the U.S. for 2014

10. SET Enterprises Inc. The company started out as S.E.T. Steel back in 1989 after chairman Sid E. Taylor left a management position with General Motors. In 2001, S.E.T. Steel became SET Enterprises Inc. and one of the biggest metal-processing companies in the United States. The company is based in Warren, Michigan, and despite falling to the No. 10 spot from its ninth-ranked spot as the most successful Black company last year, SET Enterprises actually saw an increase in revenue this year, posting $390 million. 9. Radio One Inc. Despite the economic hardships that many radio broadcasters are facing, Maryland-based Radio One has managed to hang on tight to its success. The self-proclaimed urban media specialist now has holdings in television and digital media in addition to its popular radio stations and posted more than $448 million in revenue this year. 8. Thompson Hospitality This company not only includes quick-service restaurants but also food and facilities management services. Based in Reston, Virginia, the company posted more than $480 million in revenue this year. 7. Global Automotive Alliance LLC This Detroit-based automotive parts supplier has been climbing the ranks in recent years as one of the largest and most successful Black companies in the U.S. Global Automotive Alliance. It rose in the ranks from the 12th most successful Black company in 2012 to the No. 7 spot this year with an annual revenue of $520 million. 6. The Anderson-DuBose Cos. A leader in the food and paper products distribution industry, the Ohio-based company made more than $540 million in revenue in 2014. 5. Manna Inc. Under the leadership of former NBA player Ulysses Bridgeman Jr., the massive quick-service food franchise has blossomed as one of today's most profitable Black-owned businesses. The company is based in Louisville, Kentucky, and made $630 million in revenue this year. 4. Modular Assembly Innovations LLC Modular Assembly Innovations is "the parent corporation of a group of certified minority owned companies offering world-class, innovative, manufacturing and assembly solutions to manufacturers," the corporation's official website says. MAI is based in Dublin, Ohio, and some companies in the group include Indiana Assemblies LLC and Great Lakes Assemblies LLC. This year, the company posted nearly $1.2 billion in revenue. 3. Bridgewater Interiors LLC The Detroit-based company provides parts and accessories for cars and pulled in more than $1 billion in 2009. The company is best known for its work with some of today’s most popular Ford and General Motor vehicles and reportedly made about $1.5 billion in revenue this year. 2. ACT-1 Group This employment agency is based in Torrance, California, and has more than 2,300 employees. It posted about $2.3 billion in revenue this year alone. 1. World Wide Technology Inc. Roughly four years ago, this Missouri-based technology products and consulting service firm experienced a serious spike in demand. Revenue rose more than 40 percent to $3.2 billion in 2010. The company posted $6.4 billion in revenue in 2014.
