  1. Speak the TRUT to power Tavis Smiley and Shame the Devil!

  2. Jelani Mandara says:

Go 'head bro. Tavis Smiley. A lot of us still support you and are proud of you.

  3. April Bonilla says:

What more does this house negro want Obama is doing and has been doing what he can for black folk

  4. Pam A Jack says:

I agree ; time to deal with racism; the same way we would demand a white persident to address our needs ;we got to demand it now.

  5. Aj Arnold says:

You are right,Tavis is definitely a jelly back huck-a-buck. But even a blind hog can find an acorn sometimes.

  6. Dikran Tulaine says:

Tavis is on to something but never answers the question: What do you think he should do? For TS talking is doing. He does it for a living. Obama has to "do" things that entail Boehner, McConnell and the rest of that bag of witches. So refreshing to see a repub of some honor this week with MCain. Been a few long years.

  7. Tavis Smiley is always on point.

  8. I believe he did answer the question. President Obama can use the power of his office to at least have the conversation, have a teachable moment and lead. I am a staunch supporter and fan of our President; however, I would love to see him take the lead on this one instead of tip-toeing around to appease the masses. The masses of Conservative Right will never, never agree with anything that he does- so its high time to just go for broke.

  9. Brian O. Waller says:

Funny how Tavis compared the two scenarios in which Obama went on BET to, as he put it…. lecture black folks, but then went on the other show to crack jokes, when the same can be said about him, and which I find that to be a little hypocritical. During this interview, he is somewhat subdued with his tone, but when he was on Hannity's show, he was talking with a much tougher tone that to me made Hannity happy. jmo

  10. Farntella Graham says:

Jennifer Thompson-Hawkins he is " going for broke" with his executive orders, the latest of which does not benefit us.

  11. He can act like he's got a pair… speak truth to power, condemn evil and ACT against it with the full force at his disposal!… I can't begin to imagine a Jewish President not acting in the BEST interest of Jews when they are being slain in the streets BOLDLY by SOME sick police officers. He needs to MAN UP! President up!! He can't "lecture" me till he does something with the power he has been given to end our plight!

  12. What has he done to end Black on Black crime in the USA directly? What has he done to end Black poverty, homelessness and so forth? And if nothing… WHAT THE HELL DO WE NEED A BLACK PRESIDENT FOR!

  13. April Bonilla says:

It's just never enough for some people I guess

  14. Anthony Stewart. Agreed. It's not us that need the lecture!

  15. Ira Jackson says:

Ok, if we can't wait, then what were we waiting on in between the time of Martin Luther King and President Obama? All of the problems that we've been dealing with in our community didn't just become serious issues when he became president. You mean all this time we've been waiting on a Black President to save the day? Ok, we have a Black president, when are we going to stop spending billion of our dollars each year in other communities, making them richer and start helping our own community to thrive? When are we going to start showing up at the polls? Or are we waiting on him to tell us to do those things? By now we shouldn't still have to march hoping others will sympathize with us in order to get things done. By now we should be using our political and financial clout to get things done. Why is this such an impossible thing for us to do? If we can spend 4 billion dollars a year on hair weave alone, we can certainly start investing in our own community where we can be our own voice both political and financial.

  16. Tim Williams says:

Except on homosexuality and illegal immigeation

  17. Carita Ahn says:

IF NOT NOW THEN WHEN? having a "NEGRO" (not BLACK…that's a COLOR, not an ETHNICITY or a RACE) in the WHITE HOUSE doesn't change anything , RAISE the level of CONSCIOUSNESS about US as a RACE, and as PROUD people…the whole "change-up" has conquered and divided people even more. WE ARE NEGROES…we never heard Fannie Lou Hamer say:"we BLACKS.." MLK, also used the word "NEGROES"…BLACK is a color with doesn't elevate any consciousness about OUR RACE OF PEOPLE….the "politics" of race? It's on us to determine, decide for ourselves. Take a poll: does BLACK (a crayola color) really define OURSTORY (not HIStory)? Can we get on the same page, and be at the STEERING wheel of the automobile we're driving to OUR future?

  18. Carita Ahn says:

…conquer, and DIVIDE….WE should have garnered the steering wheel and let Malcolm do the driving.

  19. Carita Ahn says:

    …PRESIDENT (spell-check!)

  20. Ira you hit the nail on the head several times. I've been saying the exact same things you've said. We seem to be waiting on what I call the "brother can I get a hook up". We expect the POTUS to just "hook up" black folks while we just stand back. We can stand in line over night for the new Jordan release, but can't find our way to the polls. We can spend our hard earned money in every other community but our own. And then we wonder why everyone looks at us as a race of consumers and now owners. Why do you think these big companies have specific advertising dollars set aside for minority driven ads? For once, I took a quick liking to Don Lemon in this interview. He asked Tavis a specific question, which he DID NOT answer. "What exactly would you have the President do?" I'm still waiting on Tavis' answer…..

  21. Pam A Jack says:

    Carita Ahn thank you

  22. Jay Contreras says:

Anthony Stewart If he was that caliber of human being..he wouldn't have gotten ANYWHERE near the white people's house. Let's be honest. He was (s)elected exactly for this reason–he can be controlled & managed & he follows directives well & guess what? WE ain't giving the directives. Follow the $ trail & it will undoubtedly lead to those who pull this corporatists' strings. Black people, you have been bamboozled.

  23. Jay Contreras says:

Carita Ahn What?! Do YOU even understand what the hell you just wrote?

  24. Dikran Tulaine says:

Jennifer Thompson-Hawkins What Tavis is speaking about, and I didn't hear the answer to the question, is, to me, better. The racism has gone high profile, and his election and re-election, has taken the lid off. I don't think it has much to do with manning up. There's enough clanking balls in Congress to waken hell and it is fruitless. And Anthony Stewart we won't know till a Jew is elected but it's a good analogy. Wait till the lid comes off the anti-Semites!

  25. Tony Coles says:

Well said, i hear people wanting Obama to do for us what we arent doing for ourselves. I dont get the MLK O bama comparison in that Obama is the president of all the U.S. not just black people. Perhaps if we had got out and voted for some senators and congressman and judges of like mind it would not be such an uphill battle. Gotta go ………the rim store and designer clothes store is bout to close….

  26. Wayne Carter says:

Soome people support Tavis, and most of them are white and republican!

  27. Former community organizer, President Obama, castrated in the White House…

  28. Tavis ,he's scared ! No he can't breath.

  29. We all know that Tavis Smiley hates the President, so everything he says is going to be negative. I'll say to Tavis stop the hate.

  30. 1. The President is not black. 2. He needs to have those police officers prosecuted for murder.

  31. sounds so simple doesn't it?

  32. Tony Coles says:

The question shouldnt be what has obama done for black people, but rather what have you done for yourself…….start a business, get traing in the new shale gas industry, get a real estate license, what? Get some new J's and complain?…..I'll wait!

  33. Tony Coles says:

I wanted to add wake up nobody is coming to our rescue.

  34. James Burns says:

tavis how long has this been going on, how long has slavery been a problem.

  35. James Burns says:

and there i lies the problem he talks but never gives a answer. we call that loving to hear your self

  36. James Burns says:

npw thats the biggest question instead of waiting for someone to do hings for us we have to start with our selves. it is always easy to say what the other person has or has not done. it takes all of us. the president is not a miracle worker. but is doing one hell of a job. the fact that we have holder on top of this tells me we are moving in the right direction but it takes every single one of us

  37. James Burns says:

I hate a man who speaks but says nothing. I have never once seen you tavis in the front line doing any dam thing fact. we see you talk but that's all we do. I have never see you on the streets period always behind the camera. you can talk the talk but I have never seen you walk the walk.

  38. James Burns says:

Anthony Stewart lol you fell for that crap that tavis spewed lol. you ever see him on the street, you ever see him on the front line. i have seen the president there but never tavis. we dont have a black president we have a president. he is not the president for black america he is the president for america. i think you are confused. the president cant take side just speak out when something is wrong. as he has over and over again.

  39. James Burns says:

and that is just what holder is doing.

  40. Sundiata Keita says:

Tavis Smiley told you about him 6 years ago and niggas still mad at him after he play like he don't se your sons being shot down in the street?
black people are about to get purged and 99% of you niggas ain't gone make it.

  41. Sundiata Keita says:

    Wayne Carter prove it

  42. Sundiata Keita says:

    two questions
    1) why are yall answering to this beast?
    2) why is he here in the first place?

  43. Sundiata Keita says:

the house negro is the one who brought AFRICOM into Africa and recolonized the whole continent. the house nigger is the one who blames black people for getting shot down in the street by people that look like his white momma.
i sincerely hope your kids get shot by the white police too so you can realize the error of your ways. not sorry

  44. Sundiata Keita says:

what has Obama done for black people?
just answer the question straight up. we are being murdered extrajudiciously every 28 hours by white folks. 4 times than we were lynched in jim crow, now tell me what has your black president done for you

  45. Sundiata Keita says:

the coon train is always on time in the comment section I see. the black radio stations told yall to hate Tavis 6 years ago and youre still falling for it. man I cant wait until your kids get killed by these police so you can wake up to this war we're in.

  46. Dennis Spurling says:

Americans don't wait for justice, equality and freedom fight for it.

  47. I don't support Tavis and never will …

  48. The President did not ask us to wait, he asked us to be patient. There is a difference. Inside of patience lies faith. Being patient does not mean not, to be in action. The President plays a part, Tavis Smiley plays a part and We play a part. What are YOU / WE willing to do? How are we as individual citizens taking responsibiity. What action are WE going to take in this matter? Nuf Said for Now.

  49. Smiley should have applied his "chronos" and "tyros" to Obama's run for President in 2008. He didn't run any differently than any other candidate. Chronos and tyros came together in 2008 for him to win…

  50. Anthony Stewart And what would you have the President do specifically for B-on-B crime? Tell them to stop? As the leader of us all, I can only imagine the fury of other Americans as Obama helps out one race and "does nothing" for the others…

  51. Carita Ahn says:

ROGER!…DID YA HEAR THIS?: " when are we going to stop spending billions of our dollars each year in other communities, making them richer and start helping our own community to thrive? When are we going to start showing up at the polls? Or are we waiting on him to tell us to do those things? By now we shouldn't still have to march hoping others will sympathize with us in order to get things done. If we can spend 4 billion dollars a year on hair weave alone, we can certainly start investing in our own community….." (SAY WHAT?…)

  52. That's why Tavis is Tavis, I agree with every thing he says except his assessment of President Obama's action toward race relations.Has he (Tavis) forgotten that the President's response has to be tempered to be all inclusive because he is the "President" of the free world. The President cannot have narrow cookie cutter ideas on how to progress. He is the leader of the Free World, he has to be cautious, thoughtful, and mindful of all the people that he governs. Dr. King spoke from a different platform, so does Tavis.

  53. Chris Hilson says:

..besides reducing unemployment, attempting to institute a universal health care plan, and injecting stimulus money into the economy.. what am I missing?

..Let me ask you a question.. What are we doing for ourselves?

  54. Ira Jackson says:

@Carita Ahn: This is from MLK’s I Have A Dream speech.
“And when this happens, when we allow freedom to ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God's children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, "Free at last! free at last! thank God Almighty, we are free at last!"

@Carita Ahn: Quote from Fannie Lou Hamer "One night I went to the church. They had a mass meeting. And I went to the church, and they talked about how it was our right, that we could register and vote. They were talking about we could vote out people that we didn't want in office, we thought that wasn't right, that we could vote them out. That sounded interesting enough to me that I wanted to try it. I had never heard, until 1962, that black people could register and vote."

  57. Jose A. Gomez says:

Carita Ahn Negroes is atin for black. How about Americans. Not African Americans, not black, not negroes.

  58. Don Andrews says:

All of you have good points, but we still can't let the President off the hook. The Federal Govt. can seek to indict those police officers if Eric Holder and President Obama thought it was important enough. That is why we have a Federal Govt. to keep the Sates in check. But I do agree with Carita and Kevin 100%.

  59. Don Andrews says:

Tony Coles When you're the man of the house you're are responsible for all the children under your roof you don't get to pick and choose which one you're going to protect and which ones you're not. All life is sacred. I hope I used the correct example.

  60. Don Pryor says:

Mr. Smiley is bitter because he thought he was worthy to be an adviser to the President. President Obama is not a Emperor… he was elected to represent all of the people of our Country. He has tried to give Black Leaders a formula for empowering change in our community. But no one listens and expects change thur executive order. He has spoken at NCAAP, Black churches, BET interviews and many other Black Leadership functions. Suggesting that we as a people think large.. bring in other Minority communities into shared problems and to mentor our children to success. He and Mr. Holder have to the best of their abilities tried to remove the Mandatory penalties our Black sons face and have been somewhat successful. What President Obama can't do is change the destructive behaviors our that plague our communities. No one wants to talk about these behaviors that contribute to our community continuing demise. What can he do about a 50 percent graduation rate in our major cities. What can he do about how we spend our money in communities other than our own. What can he do about a Murder rate among Blacks killing Blacks over a piece of ground not even their own. What can he do about us not voting and allowing candidates who don't have our best interest in mind to win. What can he do about so many of our children being persuaded that learning and excelling in school is for White people. What can he do about creating and supporting Black Businesses in our community. What can he do about Black Leader reluctant to collaborate with other Black Leaders and implementing the best programs among themselves. What can he do about.. the Street value..so many among us have adopted… No snitch.. allow Murders to walk free and kill again and again. Success is with in our grasp.. regardless of who is President. Too often we have stopped being a Village. And in doing so the Street rule and dictate the morals of our children. It is a hard pill to swallow that we are Our Own worst enemy. Half of our children are pursuing higher education. A too large proportion are pursuing quick money goals and schemes. We March when a White man kills our Sons.. but what about the 99% of murders our children commit against us. Where is the March against school systems that stymie our children. Where is the March to protect our Children going to school and our Women coming home from work. Or the Families that have no respect for their communities. So many of us Stand in Line to buy our kids things we can't afford.. but won't attend a PTA meeting or a school parent conference. I could go on.. But to what avail… We are the Masters of our Fate. And the day we as a community understand it's power to change… We will continue demand that the Master to Please make our lives better. The Asians got the message after riding to freedom on our backs. Latinos are doing better than Us.. because their leaders collaborate. We pay State taxes and can't get our proportion of kids into State Colleges. We have raised the power profile and Lifestyle of the Arab and Asian people by spending our dollars at the corner store. I am not mad at them..their children represent a percent of students in our public colleges than their population.. but their formula for success in America should be copied.. and when is the last time you seen a Black Face serving you across their counters. President Obama is President because we focused collectively on supporting him to get elected. Imagine if we used that same energy and enthusiasm to support ourselves.

  62. Tavis Smiley is a hustler pure and simple. He talks the talk but never walks the walk. He wants to seen as a leader but he is never out in front of anything except when he wants to critcize the President. To hear him , you would believe that the problems Black America face started on Jan 20, 2009 and this President is supposed to fix in eight years what the the other 43 Presidents could not do in 232 years. Tavis, get a real job for a change your act has gotten tired.
