5 Industries That Have A Serious Diversity Problem

Financial Industry "Overall management in the financial services industry is 81 percent white as of 2011. African Americans only account for 2.7 percent of senior-level staff in the financial industry, while women hold just 28.4 percent of upper management jobs," according to motherjones.com. "The NAACP published a report last year that graded the five largest banks on their inclusion of African Americans in their workforces, each barely mustering a passing grade. Bank of America and Citibank were rated as the best at a C+, trailed by JPMorgan Chase and Wells Fargo each with a C, and US Bank receiving a dismal D+," according to motherjones.com. Technology At Google, Yahoo and Facebook, Blacks make up only 2 percent of their workforces, according to their recent diversity reports. There was an 11 point difference between the highest representation of whites (61 percent at Google) and the lowest (50 percent at Yahoo). There was a nine point difference between the highest representation of Asians (39 percent at Yahoo) and the lowest (30 percent at Google), according to a previous Atlanta Blackstar article. Advertising "Of the 959,000 marketing and sales managers in the United States, 5.9 percent were African-American, 5.1 percent were Hispanic and 5 percent were Asian," according to The New York Times. The Advertising Club of New York is investing $700,000 in an initiative called I'mpart to address the diversity in the advertising industry, according to The Times. Creative Media Between 2009 and 2012, there was a decline in representation for Blacks, Asians and other minorities in production, distribution and exhibition, according to screendaily.com. "The eighth Creative Skillset Employment Census reveals that employment in the creative media industries has grown in the last three years. More women are represented than three years ago, but ethnic minorities are significantly less represented," according to screendaily.com. Journalism Results from the 2012 American Society of News Editors showed a decline in minority journalists and stagnation in prior progress. Studies showed that 90 percent of newsroom supervisors were white. Employment at newspapers dropped 2.4 percent in 2011, but it dropped by 5.7 percent for minorities, according to The Atlantic.
