Charles Barkley: ‘Unintelligent Blacks’ Holding Back Black Community

Barkley-Weight-Watchers-628x351Charles Barkley, the former NBA star who seldom shies away from sharing his opinion, chimed in strongly on the Seattle Seahawks’ anonymous criticism that quarterback Russell Wilson is not “Black enough.”

“We as Black people are never going to be successful, not because of you white people, but because of other Black people. When you are Black, you have to deal with so much crap in your life from other Black people,” Barkley said.

“For some reason we are brainwashed to think, if you’re not a thug or an idiot, you’re not Black enough. If you go to school, make good grades, speak intelligent, and don’t break the law, you’re not a good Black person. It’s a dirty, dark secret in the Black community.

“There are a lot of Black people who are unintelligent, who don’t have success. It’s best to knock a successful Black person down because they’re intelligent, they speak well, they do well in school, and they’re successful. It’s just typical BS that goes on when you’re Black, man.”

  1. This is kind of funny because I think Charles Barkley is an Idiot and he studied at Auburn and used to have a lot of money. But I still wish him the best! So his comments were hasty generalizations and all African-Americans aren't monolithic when is comes to our racial paradigm. I realize racial issues are a complex construct but Charles Barkley should stick to Basketball.

  2. Ted Langham says:

Russell should explain nothing. Read his Bio!

  3. Allen Kelly says:

He's absolutely correct !! It goes on all the time !!

  4. He never did explain his comment about unintelligent blacks holding the black community down. Let me say this Charles Barkley, what is happening in the black community has nothing to do with what you said. It is living under a system that keeps a foot on our neck, and will only allow a few blacks like yourself to make money, and you better talk like you are talking to take blame off their white supremacy system, of racism, they pay you all good, give you nice position to push their agenda, to bad you cannot see it.

  5. Mayada Kandaka Mannan says:

Its not a dirty Black Secret Charles Barkley, it is how White Supremacy has conditioned the Black Community when they perceived us as threatening in the 60's and 70's. Lets not assume We as Black People Control the activities of Economics, Entertainment, Law, Politics, Sex, or Religion. You yourself Charles are simply participating in a system you have no control of…but rather it controls you. We have been dumbed down intentionally….

  6. There's a loud ring of truth in that statement.

  7. Terrell Mitchell says:

What community, I live in a neighborhood.

  8. Faithful Fae says:

I sure do agree. we don't need no one else to treat us bad we do it to each other. and then we have the nerve to knock the ones that choose to get out the ghetto mentality. 1st thing we say when a black speaks good proper English…he white or he's a nerd bc he smart…..smh Blacks are they own worse enemy.

  9. Charles Barkley is right. If we are brainwashed then who is doing the brainwashing? Listen to rap music glorify ignorance while most of the movies made about black people are negative. One thing was wrong with his comment. There are actually intelligent black people who is under the brainwashing as well. Ive witnessed straight A students drop out of high school to live that glorified gangsta life. I may not agree with Charles Barkley all the time but even a broken clock is right twice a day.

  10. Ronald Bruce Robinson says:

One thing's for sure – unintelligent whites, e.g., Fox News Fundamentalists – are doing everything possible to hold ALL AMERICANS down – even themselves.

  11. Barkley is right. That is the torment that makes it twice as hard being black. A lot of people seem uncomfortable with anything to academic. I also find it funny how many people in the black community dislike Bill Cosby's rants and feel he is in no place to talk yet if you look at his life work he has done immense positive for lack culture in America. The people who need those talks the most hate the fact some one has the heart to bring it up.

  12. Yeah he's right. Racism and discrimination still happen but its not nearly as prevalent as it once was. Anytime a black man leaves the ghetto suddenly he "changed" or is "fake" because he wants to know more and live better. Its honestly sad, not funny…

  13. Dionne Jones-Jones says:

I agree, Crabs in a barrel attitude, we are our own worst enemy.

  14. Mike Reese says:

Charles is partly correct. It is not just those who think you are 'white' if you speak English correctly and live a 'square' life. But they are a large part of it. I have a friend whose brother runs the streets, has a bunch of baby mamas and so on.. he told me that the last time he spoke to his brother, he was needling him about how 'square' and 'white' he had raised his children to act.. so he turned it on him and asked, "How are your kids doing?" Well, all he could do was frown and look at the floor. And because a powerful media continues to dress up such behavior as 'Black', too many are fooled into forgetting that our ancestors were not immoral, violent, ignorant clowns that some think are really 'Black' , when they would be losers in ANY society.

  15. you are delusional

  16. You are who you sleep with!!!! Anytime someone uses the behavior of an IGNORANT group of people to describe a people-they are as IGNORANT. Who else can one ACT like inorder to get ahead in America. If Black/A.A. folk owned things of significance (hospitals, supermarkets, Banks, etc.) they wouldn't have to use a tone of european ,white emulation. Black/A.A. folk may feel comfortable sounding like a Paul Robinson, Muhammad Ali, Martin Luther King, Malcom X, Adam C. Powell, Joanne Chisemeir, Gil Noble, Farrakhan, etc. My point is-believe it or not- those folk who sound the way the sound is for them to be ACCEPTED amongst the ones who OWN EVERYTHING that is SIGNIFICANT. Long story short–they can give your butt a JOB.

  17. This guy thinks black people are exempt from having idiots among their midst. Everywhere you go, there's dummies. And the more stupid, unintelligent, uneducated people there are there, the worse living conditions are for everyone and the worse and harder life is for everyone. There's plenty of dumb white people holding us back, they're just not highlighted because they're not violent. However, dumb black people are highlighted because they're usually also violent, which just makes things twice as bad.

Stop the violence and the rest will follow. All good things can not exist around violence.

  18. Rosa Hall says:

I AGREE WITH RONALD AND PRIMAS AND PHILLIP BLACKS DO OWN BUSINESSES , READ, READ, IF YOU WANT MY OPINION CHARLES BARKLEY NEED TO GO BACK TO SCHOOL. IN ESSENCE WHERE WOULD BE IF NOT FOR BASKETBALL? IT'S A SHAME WHY OUR RACE ARE ALWAYS SPEAKING BAD ABOUT THEIR OWN, WHEN THE OTHERS ARE DOING JUST THAT . .

  19. Mr. Simpson, I usually read the comments rather than post my own, but I just have to let you know that your outlook on Barkley is correct. I believe that Barkley is undereducated and can only offer a limited view concerning the dynamics of Black people. When he says things like he said in this article, it only serves to reinforce negative Black stereotypes that the majority have.

  20. Rosa Hall says:

THEIR IS NO TRUTH IN THAT DUMB STATEMENT, CHARLES BARKLEY "DELUSIONAL" NEED TO GO BACK TO SCHOOL HIMSELF AND LEARN HOW TO SPEAK.

  21. Rosa Hall says:

NOT ONLY THAT STATEMENT FITS BLACK PEOPLE JEREMY BUT ALL WALKS OF LIFE. BLACK DO SOMETIME HURT THEIR RACE, LOOK AT WHAT THEY DO IF AND WHEN THEY DO MAKE LOTS OF MONEY. ASK YOURSELF THAT QUESTION?

  22. Rosa Hall says:

I DO AGREE WITH NOT ACTING LIKE A GANGSTER PART, MY SON HAD THAT PROBLEM WITH THE BLACKS IN SCHOOL, HE WAS CALL ED WEIRD OR SQUARE BECAUSE HE DIDNOT WEAR HIS PANTS BELOW HIS BUTT ANS DID NOT SPEAK LIKE THE OTHER KIDS. BUT WHERE ARE MOST OF THOSE KIDS TODAY? ONE GUEST. "RIGHT" AND THAT'S HAS TO DO WITH THE PARENTS. TRAINING IN THE HOME, BUT THAT IS NOT ONLY IN BLACK HOMES IT IS IN ALL RACES. PARENT ARE TO BUSY TRYING TO LIVE, HAVING FUN AND FORGET ABOUT THEIR CHILDREN.
