Another is that back then slavery was nothing like what it was for Blacks in American during slavery. Their slaves had much more freedom. A lot of people today don't realize just how revolutionary that was. The older generation hated him, but the younger generation knew that what he was doing was genuine and coming from the heart. Of course, there were a ton of artists, both black and white, who contributed to the development of Rock and Roll. They all deserve credit, the only difference was that Elvis was the biggest one of them all. Little Richard said it best when he said: "He was an integrator. He was a blessing. They [the industry] wouldn't let Black music through. He opened the door for Black music." Little Richard gets it – Elvis, along with Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, Little Richard, etc. were pioneers not only of a whole genre of music – they were Civil Rights heroes (close to a decade before the movement really took hold) because they were bringing all of the youth of America together through an incredible blend of so many different styles of music. I definitely think it is important to know and acknowledge where the music roots come from and where our influences come from, but Elvis acknowledged this just as much as anyone else at that time. Just look at his interviews, quotes from his whole career and you'll see for yourself. Rock and Roll music in and of itself IS Civil Rights. Rock and Roll music was one of the best blessings our country has ever had.
