France and Bartholdi's (sculptural artist) gift was to acknowledge the abolishment of slavery. The statue was altered because some Americans didn't want the image of the chains visible because it would offend others who would oppose the changes of Blacks' lives in America.

We have to take responsibility for our own actions but don't kid yourself. White America is still hating and instrumental in keeping us from moving as far as we can. Our people still are suffering from slavery, but a much more subtle form of it. It seeps into all faucets of the modern society. The judicial, political, educational and of course the economic systems of today, were founded upon slavery, but they had to subjugate our minds first!
