After laying low for most of 2013, Nicki Minaj is gearing up for the release of her third studio album, “The Pink Print.” Recently, she made her presence felt with a series of teaser tracks and remixes, including “Chiraq” and “Yass Bish!!” Today, however, she returns with the proper first single from “The Pink Print” in “Pills N Potions.”
Here, Minaj lends ample time to both her aspirations as a songbird (a feat made easier thanks to Dr. Luke’s dreamy, mainstream-leaning production) and her rugged lyricism. With the hook, she manages one of her most appealing performances, crooning “Pills n potions / We’re overdosing / Can’t stand it but I still love you.” It’s with her verses, though, where she drops the angelic act, cutting off rhymes about two-faced detractors, turning the other cheek and the almighty power of self-esteem.
“It feels very uplifting and it feels very soulful,” Minaj told Rap-Up TV of the track. “It’s a great, I feel, indicator of what ‘The Pink Print’ will feel like in terms of the storyline of that song.”
“The Pink Print” is due out later this year. Of the follow-up to 2012’s “Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded,” Minaj said, “‘The Pink Print’ will remind people why they fell in love with Nicki Minaj. And I think that needs to be done.”
