“Mad Men” season 7, episode 4: “The Monolith” airs tonight on AMC.

“Mad Men” is a TV drama about one of New York’s most prestigious ad agencies at the beginning of the 1960s, focusing on one of the firm’s most mysterious but extremely talented ad executives, Donald Draper. According to the show’s pilot, the phrase Mad Men was a slang term coined in the 1950s by advertisers working on Madison Avenue to refer to themselves, the term being a portmanteau of the expression “ad men” (short for “advertising men”) and the metonymic expression for the advertising industry, “Madison Avenue.” The focal point of the series is Don Draper (Jon Hamm), creative director at Sterling Cooper and a founding partner at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce, and the people in his life, both in and out of the office.
