7 Great African Military Leaders Who Repelled European and Arab Oppression

African military history is considered one of the oldest in the world. These militaries were led by some of the greatest leaders in time. Here’s a look at seven of the most extraordinary commanders in history:

hannibal barca

Hannibal Barca

Born in 247 B.C., while there is no picture of Hannibal in existence, the coin pictured below is often used to represent Hannibal and his legacy of tamed elephants. Hannibal is said to be one of the greatest military strategists of all time, whose battles helped to build African history. Hannibal began serving in the military at 17 years old, when his father was killed in battle. In 218 BC, Hannibal and his troops fought in the Second Punic War in the Alps. While Hannibal lost many men in the Alps, he went on to lead troops for 15 years, winning several battles, including the Battle of Cannae, where he lost 6,000 troops to Rome’s 70,000.

Great list next time add Jaja of Opobo. He was the first to resist the scrambble for Africa. Banished the British from entering the Niger Delta to trade palm oil was only tricked into exile when he went aboard a British ship to sign a treaty. (Refused to sign an agreement to make his area of influence a 'British Protectorate' -telling the British to tell their queen that 'Jaja can protect himself)'- Great African he was!

  8. What about Ismail Mire, the commander of Dervish army Taleh, Somalia.

  9. While there is no 100% proof of Hannibal's race it is highly unlikely that he was black. The Carthagian citizens were originally Phonicans. These were people from northern modern Israel who were known for their trade through out the Mediterranean. Carthage Hannibal's home city was a colony that these people made and that he lived at till he was 9. The coin they talk about in the article is the only of thousands of Charthagien coins that show someone considered black on them. The coin they talk about in the article is believed to be a coin Hannibal had made to commemorate one of his elephant riders.

  10. Al Jones What do you mean by denier?
I just have a different opinion. I think that if Hannibal and his African part of his army where black that the ancient sources such as Polybius would have pointed this out.
Polybius who is the father of modern history who went and had first hand sources from the time made many very clear details in his work. He even went into detail of what the soldiers in Hannibal's army wore and their color of their cloths. I think if Hannibal and his army where black he would have clearly said this.
I personally believe that he was someone who would look very Jewish to a person of today, being that the people of Carthage came from that area. Also if you search coins of Carthage the only one that appears to show a black man on it is the one in this article. While the thousands of others found show much different representations of the people of Carthage.

  11. Dan Lee says:

Vinny Siracusa I'll take the word of just about every historian I've ever read on Hannibal's lineage over some guy from Jersey ANY day of the week!

  12. Your are just plain WRONG ! please stick to football and stay out of our history.

  13. Dan Lee It's not my word it is Polybius's word. He is the foremost historian on the 2nd Punic war. And many other historians agree with me and the evidence that I provide makes my argument greater then yours that has given no sources.

  14. Dan Lee It's not my word it is Polybius's word. He is the foremost historian on the 2nd Punic war. And many other historians agree with me and the evidence that I provide makes my argument greater then yours that has given no sources.

  15. Dan Lee says:

Vinny Siracusa And I have a list of books as long as your arm that says otherwise. They came before Columbus, The African Origins of Civilization, Lies my Teacher Told Me and MANY others. You are out of you league. That cat you referenced is one person who is CALLED a for most historian who is about maintaining the status quo. He probably believes Cleopatra and the ancient Egyptians were White too! SHEESH!

  16. Dan Lee How is Polybius maintaining the status que? He LIVED back then and had first had references to what was going on back then along with living back then. He also isn't the only person who lived back then who has wrote of the 2nd Punic war and not one thought Hannibal was a darker skinned man then the common Roman, Iberian, Greek, or Semitic.

If Polbius did think Hannibal was black he would have wrote that MAJOR point down. As I have said he went into great detail to describe minute details of the 2nd Punic war. And if the Carthaginians where black why would they have put all white appearing people on the thousands of other coins we have found besides this one in this article.

I have also read that this said coin could likely be a coin depicting a elephant rider of Pyrrhus the king of Epirus. This is because the elephant depicted on the coin is a Indian elephant which Hannibal did not have. Hannibal had the smaller now extinct north African bush elephant. This coin was also found in Itay where Pyrrhus invaded the Romans also with Elephants about 60 years before Hannibal invaded Italy.

I don't know why you are bringing up Cleopatra but she was a majority Greek. She is a decedent of the Alexander the Great's general Ptolemy who took ownership of Egypt after his death. She likely by this point though did have Egyptian mixed, but not much because the Ptolemy's married Brother to Sister in the Egyptian fashion to maintain bloodlines when available.

  17. Brett David Nickle says:

Vinny Siracusa is correct. Dan Lee, you should look at sources other than the one's on this website. You're only seeing what you want to see, so only acknowledging sources that say Hannibal was black, while at the same time completely disregarding anything that says otherwise.

  18. Dan Lee says:

Vinny Siracusa Oh PULEEZE I had you and your cheerleaders right. I KNEW bringing in Cleopatra would bring out the the people that have little knowledge of history. I cited BOOKS Nickle NOT WEBSITES. Those and MANY other books cite all types of historians AND supporting evidence. I'll take THEM over your lonely historian any day of the week!

  19. Brett David Nickle says:

Dan Lee was Hannibal Carthaginian? the answer to that is yes, now Carthage was founded by Phoenicians. Here is a wikipedia link discussing the Phoenicians

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phoenicia#Demographics

The Phoenicians were Semitic, here is the wiki link expanding on this.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semitic_people

Now, since Hannibal was Carthaginian, and Carthaginians were descendants of Phoenicians, it is logical to deduct that Hannibal was most likely Semitic. Just because Hannibal lived in North Africa doesn't mean he was black.

If you do not trust wikipedia, there are plenty of links referencing the original sources at the bottom of the articles. If you disagree with me, then state what is wrong with my argument.

  20. Edward Lee Newsome says:

    Hannibal great black man !!!!

  21. Bigg Knuck says:

@Nickel Please explain to me what exactly is a Semite?

  22. Bigg Knuck A Semite is a person who is like a Jewish person but does not follow the Jewish religion. The Phoenician head God was Baal Hamon.

  23. Dan Lee And many, many, many historians who have wrote books disagree with you. And the "historians" you claim that say Hannibal was black do not agree with the original ancient sources which every credible historian uses to show how the past was. Because you have to use evidence in history. On the subject of evidence could you please explain what these books say that makes them think that Hannibal was black? I'm sorry I haven't read those but I have used evidence to prove my point while you have just cited books that who knows what they say in them.

  24. Dan Lee says:

    Vinny Siracusa ZZZZZzzzz!

  25. Bigg Knuck says:

@Vinny Siracusa That's a bible term coming from shem but from a historical standpoint the Semites were a mixed race of afro asians. The Phoenicians were black people. No such thing as a Jewish person unless your talking religion. Your history is young these people didn't define themselves as these names.

  26. Dan Lee I'm trying to have a respectful intelligent conversation about history with you and you ignore all my posts with info and my requests for you to explain your position and you are now acting like a child.

  27. Al Jones says:

Vinny Siracusa I AM GLAD YOU ARE CONVINCED ,YOU MIGHT AS WELL ARGUE HOW YOU FEEL….ME PERSONALLY AM NOT CONVINCED BY EUROPEAN HISTORY WRITERS, THEY DEFINITELY HAD A REASON TO WRITE WHAT THEY BELIEVE…HANNIBAL HAD A EXTENDED STAY IN EUROPE AND ITALY ESPECIALLY…MAKE YOUR SELF FEEL WHATEVER YOU WANT…..DENY AWAY

  28. Ajani Thomas says:

Vinny Siracusa I see who have brought a quite intelligence argument to the table my friend. However, resources have made it quite clear, the race of the African leader. Historians of the time described him in a quite similar fashion as the late Ethiopian/Axum class. As well as a host of Carthaginian artifacts, depicting him similar to what you see here. On top of that, the regions which was Carthage before its fall, became the original Moorish empire, which stretched far past Spain and Italy as well. These were indeed black Africans. The Northern peoples you se today are highly mixed, which I can say are not of the same blood we have seen throughout history (Islamic Invasion – 750 AD and onwards). You can believe what you wish, but I will stick with the historians and clear evidence on this one. I'm sure we could go on for ages arguing the race of the Greeks. They are forever portrayed as Northern European when in fact they are for more semitic in appearance. What do you say to this? I will wait 😉

  29. Heru Salmon says:

Vinny Siracusa Hannibal was black. You don't know what the people in phoenicia look like back them. We not talking about greco phoenicians. We are talking about native who were more related to the ancient egyptians. I have seen depiction of them and they look black. So hannibal was black. So were the people living in palestine were mixed with black in those days

  30. Al Jones Yes me and you both can think whatever we both want to. I'm fine with that but I'm just trying to provide evidence for my side of the argument. As you are also welcome to do. Because I am not the one "denying away" I am providing evidence while you and Dan Lee deny away.

How does Hannibal having a extended stay in Europe make him black? If anything that would have given more people a chance to see him and write down that he was black. Which they would have done because very few of them would have ever seen a black man.

Why are you not convinced by history writers? The man who has the most detailed work on the 2nd Punic war who also lived during it was a Greek man named Polybius sent to live in captivity in Italy after they had been defeated by the Romans. If you read his work he has no bias in it. He writes glowingly of Hannibal and would have no reason to change history. Through out his whole work he criticizes historians who do not use first hand live examples as sources. What would have been his reason to say Hannibal was not black?

  31. Ajani Thomas says:

Vinny Siracusa You didn't exactly respond Vinny. Many descriptions exist of Hannibal's appearance. Many speak of dark skinned, rugged, tight locked haired people. Very same for the Ancient Egyptians. Also, to say Ancient Europeans were estranged to what an African would look like is simply uninformed. Black peoples had lived in these areas, from Greece to the Iberian Peninsula, for thousands of years. I mean the Moors were only pushed out a couple hundred years ago… So I must ask, before you retort, read my passage above and come with some facts.

  32. Brett David Nickle says:

Why would Hannibal be black, if his ancestors came from Phoenicia ? That's honestly the biggest piece of the puzzle here, the Phoenicians were Semitic, therefore their colonies would have been Semitic. Therefore Hannibal was most likely Semitic.

  33. Ajani Thomas says:

Brett David Nickle Again, Ancient African people existed in these areas. Even the term semitic is suggestive in the least. His descendants include large spans of African moors you famously conquered Spain and South Italy after Rome fell. It was the same fucking people. Exactly why does it matter to you that much anyway? Does the fact that Cleopatra the great was born in Egypt make her white? This phoenician nonsense is such a poor argument. Lol. I must ask you to live off evidence and historical relevance my boy.

  34. Al Jones says:

Bigg Knuck A SEMITE IS A WHITE JEW,ONE OF THE SO CALLED TRIBES OF ISRAEL….THEIR WERE 12 MORE TRIBES

  35. Ajani Thomas I'm sorry I actually had not seen your response till now because I was writing my previous response when your past post was posted. Thank you for being the first person to respond to me with info on are topic. I have read many of the ancient sources on the 2nd Punic war but I have never read one that has described Hannibal as black. Could you inform me of who this was who has stated this?

I am not at all saying that black people did not live in North Africa at this time. I believe Hannibal was a very dark skinned white man though for the reasons I have posted on these comments above. And as I have just said I would love to read the ancient historian who wrote what you have said about Hannibal. I have used Polybius as my primary source because he has the largest amount of books and details on the 2nd Punic war.

P.S. I do agree with you of the inaccuracies of art depicting Greeks as very very light skinned. In fact according to Xenophon, Greeks were whiter than Egyptians and darker than Persians. Aristotle also described Greeks as having a skin color between Persians (darker than) and Egyptians (lighter than).

  36. Dynast Amir says:

Im hoping that Danny Glover's Toussaint Louverture project comes into fruition.

  37. Brett David Nickle says:

Ajani Thomas , I never said anything about Cleopatra or Egypt. The reason why this matters to me is because to me, it is fairly obvious that the Carthaginians were Semitic as they were founded as a Phoenician colony.

As an example, The British 13 colonies that were founded by the British, were made up of British settlers. Similarly the Phoenician founded colony of Carthage would have been made up of Phoenicians whom were Semitic. Hannibal was a descendant of these Phoenician traders, and as such would most likely have been semitic. Just because he lived in Africa does not mean he was black.

  38. Did Shaka Zulu "repel" European aggression or was Shaka playing the role of African Imperialist? From what I've studied so far, it seems the latter.

As for #5, There were lots of them. There is even an underground temple burial site with all the "Ras" swords, armor, and crowns. You'll never see anything about this on the HIStory channel though.

It's where Ras Tafari (Rastafari) gets their name from. Ras Tafari is Haile Sellasie.

  40. Anonymous says:

    Vinny Siracusa

Vinny, back then, there was nothing "MAJOR" about a black African leading an army, especially in a place like Phoenicia, where blacks had lived and one could claim was responsible for it's civil inception. There were different periods of rule in Phoenicia much like in Egypt. You need to quit worring about this erroneous term "Semite" because it means nothing. There are black "semites", white "semites", arab "semites". It is an empty, 20th century racial construct.

  41. smithlovy I don't think there is anything major about a black African leading a army but as Brett David Nickle has said it would have been major for such a general to lead a army into Italy and live there for 17 years without someone writing down that he was black.

The Semites part of my argument is not are only source as well. As the article on this site has posted the single coin depicting a black man on it. If you just simply Google Carthaginian coins you will see the thousand that we have found that depict a similar appearance to the people Romans and Greeks depict on their ancient coins. And as I have posted in a post above the coin this article claims to be Hannibal is much more likely to be a elephant rider of Pyrrhus of Epirus who had led Indian elephants depicted on the coin into Italy where the coin was found.

  42. smithlovy History channel doesn't even show history anymore unfourtuntly. All they show are stupid shows like ancient aliens, American pickers and Pawn stars

  46. Black men/man who have film talent and the cultural intestinal fortitude should make a film on one or all of these military leaders, it would take a grass roots effort to raise the money, and it would be the only way to assure the story is told from black folks point of view. I would enjoy watching white folks, particularly white men squirm at the image of black men as real heros, not something they are accustomed to. It would be fun watching them obfuscate and deflect as seen on this thread.

  47. King Bazén says:

You better mention the great war lord "Ras Alula" than Ras Mengesha Seyoum…….but it is good that you mentioned one…. all were heroes!

  48. Since nobody will provide any sources or actual evidence to respond to the information and evidence I have brought in my posts on this article about Hannibal being black I will leave a closing message for my point on bringing this point up. If anyone is interested in the evidence I have posted it is listed in the long back in forth post below.

Everybody is interested in the history of their people, especially for members of a group that's suffered oppression and degradation in the past who will look to exploit (for the lack of a better word) even the most tenuous connection in order to craft a more positive narrative to really take pride in. Just about every country or ethnic group is guilty of that at some level, but at the end of day we are all better served knowing the true story, not just the one we want to be real.

Instead of acknowledging facts or bringing your own with sources it appears you are trying to change history by making black people have a better standing in it. The only problem is that you are applying a completely modern "western" standards instead of using the actual original sources written thousands of years ago with no reason to change history or have some kind of bias that it appears in the info you gentlemen have attempted to provide.

So what there where no world conquering black generals. That is a GOOD thing if you think about it. The societies west and south of the Sahara didn't have a culture based on fame through conquering a lot of land around them. Warfare was based on tribal societies with personal fame and honor. That is not a bad thing.

I would also like to thank this site for allowing me to post and discuss this conversation here and not attempt to block what I have said.

And I am trying to get you to understand that in those times, something like this was NOT outside the norm. Neither Greek not Roman societies were lily white as depicted in the movies. Phoenecia even less so. Do you think black people have some imaginary line confining them to "sub-saharan" Africa? The further back in time you go, the more ridiculous the notion becomes. Especially in that part of southern Europe and beyond. It is the main reason why archaeologist keep finding these "negro" elongated type skulls all over the map.

As we coloreds say…free your mind and you a** will follow.

  51. Nubia House says:

Vinny Siracusa what does jewish looking mean anyway, considering jewish ppl came out of Afrika? unless you are suggesting that "jewish" looking means european? you are obviously joking. Did jesus look like a european? if he existed

  52. Nubia House says:

what does"jewish" looking mean? do you mean european looking? there were no europeans living in large numbers in that part of the world at that time? so what does a jew look like?

  53. Nubia House says:

there is no mention of Menelik II who beat up the Italians in the battle of Adawa in 1896-boom shock and lick dem outta Afrika

  54. Nubia House I don't know why you are making your above post here. I didn't not mention Jewish people in my above post. I will though address your post on the long back and forth post below since you decided to post it twice.

My above post was to give my reason for my position and to ask for any source or info for your side of the argument of Hannibal being black. I have given many sources and info to make my argument not only the info of Hannibal being from Carthage which was a Phoenician colony.

  55. Nubia House We are not discussing what ancient Jewish people looked like but what Hannibal looked like. I don't want to start a separate argument on here. But if you would like to see how the ancient Carthaginians thought they looked simply Google Carthaginian coins. There are thousands found with what would appear to be "European" looking people. These coins are something that can't be changed over time like you guys think history has been. Even though if you go back and read the ancient sources they have the same opinion as current historians as well.

  56. Nubia House says:

Vinny Siracusa you said " I personally believe that he was someone who would look very Jewish to a person of today, being that the people of Carthage came from that area." i'm interested in what you mean by "jewish" looking. what does that mean to you? european looking? as the jews who now reside in palestine are from europe?

  57. Nubia House Yes I did say that but I said it in my post below so you should make that comment there. I will answer it below, I don't want the conversation to spread to a million posts all over the comment section.

  58. Nubia House Yes Nubia House I believe Hannibal would have looked like a modern person living in Israel but with darker skin since his ancestors skin would have gotten darker from living under the African sun. I believe this for the reasons that I have posted above. As I have posted above according to Xenophon, Greeks were whiter than Egyptians and darker than Persians. Aristotle also described Greeks as having a skin color between Persians (darker than) and Egyptians (lighter than). These are all ancient sources of people who had first had knowledge of how people looked back then. When they describe the Persians they mean everyone to the east of Greece to the ancient Greeks. Now even with this evidence you could still say they are lying which nobody will ever know if they were but I'd have to ask what would be the reason for them to lie about this? But the best physical prove we have are the remaining coins from ancient Carthage depicting the people much how the Greeks and Romans depicted themselves. Unfortunately all of Carthage's history books where lost when the Romans destroyed the city and all their books after the 3rd Punic war. So all we have to go off of in physical prove if you want to reject the ancient historical sources, is the remaining coins and buildings left over from Carthage.

  59. Nubia House says:

Vinny Siracusa well answer what "jewish" looking means then?

  60. Nubia House I've just now replied to your question below on what "Jewish" looking means to me in how Hannibal would look in my opinion based on the information I also listed below.

  61. Nubia House says:

Vinny Siracusa the semite language originates from the land of punt or ethiopia? do your research. just cos your source does not say he's blak it does not mean he wasn't blak. you have no real evidence to say he wasn't blak except a historian who didn't say he was blak. that's not evidence Vinny. it's conjecture

  62. Nubia House So if I speak Chinese does that make me Chinese? You keep focusing on the fact I gave of Carthage being originally a colony from Phoenicia but are ignoring the other evidence I have given such as the physical prove of the coins and I have given many ancient historians as sources not just a single one.

It is not me who has given no evidence as I have given lots of evidence in my posts below not just focusing on one. While I have yet to be given any evidence with a source to suggest that Hannibal was black.

  63. Vinny Siracusa : Original Jews are still Black today! The Prophet Jeremiah clearly teaches this as truth! And don't forget that Hannibal and his Black African Army birthed children by Italian women. You hate this right?

  64. Yes you did make that comment ignorantly not knowing that the Hebrews have a Black Bloodline! Besides that: there is a Black Messiah who Resurrected from the dead named Yahshua/Jesus, who warned us about those who call themselves Jews who are from the Synagogue's of satan! The real Jews are in bondage in every nation they are found. Christ will soon return and deliver us from the hands of the wicked!

  65. Robert Alston Please go read the ancient historian Polybius. In his aswell all the ancient historians work they say the Carthaginian army was led by Carthaginian citizens but they had such a low population that they were forced to employ large mercenary armies from Iberia (modern Spain), Gaul (modern France) and Greece as well as Numidan cavalry. This was especially true during the 2nd Punic was which is the one Hannibal fought in. After the first Punic war the loses were so great on the Carthaginian side that almost the whole armies were made of mercenaries from that point on.

As far as Italian women having children with soldiers of Hannibal's army I am sure this happened alot. Hannibal and his army went from city to city burning cites and raping women killing the children trying to force the Romans into surrendering because they weren't capable of making siege works large enough to take Rome. This happened for 17 years but the Romans fought on and went on to win the war after Hannibal lost the battle of Zama.

Hannibal was known for the brutality towards the Latins and actually tried to get Italian cities to turn against Rome who had previously captured those cities. During this point in history there was a big difference between Latins (Romans) and the rest of Italy who had by the time of Hannibal all surrendered to Rome. Hannibal tried to be as "nice" as he could to the Italians to try and convince them to turn against Rome. And some of them did, this is why Hannibal was able to fight in Italy for so long.

  66. Tedla Gebeyehu says:

Ras Mengesha didn't do what you claimed please bring your facts straight. Don't miss lead and bias history .

  67. Tedla Gebeyehu says:

Ras Alula Aba Nega is the one who fought and expelled invading Egyptian Arab forces more than twice.

  68. Robert Alston We are talking about Hannibal being black. Almost everything you posted there has nothing to do with what we are talking about. Yes I have said Hannibal was Phoenician because Carthage was a Phoenician colony so that would make him Phoenician. Someone asked what a Phoenician looked like and according to the ancient sources the Phoenicians were a Semitic people but with a different religion then Jewish people.

I you want to try to argue that Phoenicians were black as well I'll just give this point up because you clearly did not read all my posts on this article. I do not want to start talking about weather ancient Egyptians or Jews were black. We are talking about if Hannibal was black and even with out that point I have given many many more sources of why Hannibal was not black besides the fact he was of Phoenician ancestry. JUST GOOGLE CARTHAGINIAN COINS!!

  71. I could see the opening scene to a Hannibal Barcar movie, who was he? then you'll see modern day european scientist carbon dating the coin above that was found at Lake Trasimene where Hannibal defeated the Romans. You'll see the dates corresponding with the time of Hannibal. Then the narrator would say, "well maybe the image was that of a common elephant rider?"Then the narrator would say"well knowing the times, when a commander would win, he would have coins minted in his image and honor, showing YOURSELF as your enemy's deity, given the style in which the coin was minted would indicate that." After the comment you would see a jet black man with an elephant behind him standing over the bodies of dead romans, in the style of "300". LOL

  72. If you guys want to learn more about Hannibal here is a youtube movie telling the history of Hannibal https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJrShQRh8Ns This is how I think that Hannibal would have looked. Pay close attention at the 15 min mark where they talk about the Carthaginian coins.

  80. Khalil Malik There are no remains of Hannibal's body since we have no idea what happened to his body after he killed him self. The Romans likely took his body back to Rome and hung it up somewhere till it became unrecognizable then threw it in a ditch.

  82. Khalil Malik says:

I missing something what is your point Vinny?

  83. Khalil Malik I was referring to your comment of "If there are any remains of a body it can be proven how much melanin is in the body, if any to satisfy all concern". I thought you were saying we could test to see Hannibal's skin color if we had his body to test.

  85. Khalil Malik says:

    Jews did not exist then.
    Hebrews

  86. Khalil Malik Also not that I want to discuss weather ancient Hebrews were black, it is also very unlikely that that is true as well. Very few people believe this but I am no expert on that subject so I will just agree to disagree with you on that subject.

But as for history I am very well studied in that area. And I can say with probably 98% sure that Hannibal was not black. Based on the many points I have provided in my posts on this article.

  88. Khalil Malik That is true. Hebrew is the biblical term for the Israelites ('Ivrim'=Hebrews). Like Chinese speak Chinese, Hebrews speak Hebrew etc. However, by the time the Romans came around to grace the Jewish people with that name, only the tribe of Judah remained easily identified. For this reason Hebrews have become know as Jews (Jews is a derivative of Judeans, are are Juden, Yid etc.). Hebrews is both a more ancient and more accurate term.

  89. Khalil Malik says:

Your history will give you the origin of all that's good to have identity, that has it's origin in ourstory, take care and continue to know.

  92. The Ashantis beat the British in 1823 in the first Angio-Ashanit war, despite the fact that the Brits had superior numbers (including other tribes). In the second war, the Ashantis fought bravely, and proved themselves as a people to be remembered in the pages of history.

  93. أسد إبراهيم says:

What do you mean Arab oppression? Those people are not Arabs, they are Turks. The Black man is the true Arabs.

  94. Hanna Moges says:

While this a very interesting selection, I believe one very prominent person in african history is not given the credit he deserves. Emperor Menilik of Ethiopia, who led an army to battle of Adwa and defeated the Italian invedors. This is the first victory for an African king to defeat European army during the area of colonizatio. Just a thought

Another distortion of history why you didn't mention king kaleb of axum who control all Arabia, Greece and Rome, he was the super power in this world at that time.

  99. أسد إبراهيم says:

Laeticia Gomez you have no clue what you are talking about. Those people you refer to as Arabs are Turks and Aryans. They are Caucasians, not Arabs. Arabs are very dark skin people. A tribe of Dark Africans from Northern Africa and India. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-oz3BZ2l5BRE/TybxdWOcUXI/AAAAAAAAAEo/sjGpewmLy90/s1600/Halik+African.jpg

  100. There is no such thing as a very dark skinned white man. If you are very dark skinned, that means you have AFRICAN blood some where.

  106. Must agree with dondi on this one… The Arabs in the middle east aren't the ancient Arabs they are Turk's and Aryans… invaders claiming Islam and that entire geographic falsely. As are the false Egyptians living in in Egypt now… those too are Turk's and Aryans claiming Egypt as their own falsely.

  107. Aayan Naim says:

There was no such word as black in that. We that are classified as black today are actually the decents of those of that day. Black is a status not a face of people. We have been tricked into that lost dead black condition. Study to know the truth. We are not black not Negro not African American

can't tell if vinny is stupid or just mentally sick.

  113. Lee Russell says:

Vinny Siracusa dude, you really think white people could survive in northern africa where there wasn't any air conditions? you guys can't even handle west texas heat, i know for sure you can't handle Africa's.

  114. Lee Russell says:

Vinny Siracusa you can't use today''s tempature in northern africa and compared to yesterday because there is hard evidence the planet is cooling down, so it would been alot hotter back then. italy was also place fulled of blacks till first wave albinos from asia.

  115. Lee Russell Everyone says the world is warming up not cooling down(Global warming). And even if it was a average of 15 degrees hotter it is still hotter here in America now and "white people" live fine here. By the way your a pretty rude person. How am I "stupid or mentally sick" when I am the only one bringing facts with sources to the table and all I get in return is to berated by comments like yours and others posting to this story.

  116. Lee Russell says:

Vinny Siracusa actually corporations say world is warming up while reality says earth is cooling down because of the sun.
everybody lives fine now because of air conditions. it easy to talk when you got air condition, but you and me stand out in the sun and i'm be only one who doesn't melt because I was born natural brown.
because you're only one not bringin' facts and sources. holiday inn travel guide is not proof, they put up good numbers to get ppl to travel DUH.

  117. Lee Russell So can you provide a link that the world was hotter in N Africa in 200 B.C.?
And even if it was hot there then which it wasn't that wouldn't make Carthage only able to live there by dark skinned Africans. And people were not just living outside in this time period anyway. Carthage was known for it's Greek styled buildings during the time of it's existence. Also if you re-read my posts I am not making the argument that Hannibal was a pearl white man because he wasn't. But he was a Phoenician which is a person who would have looked to modern people as Italian, Greek, or Jewish before "black".

And your crazy or have not read all of the comments on this thread if you think I have not brought factual evidence to my argument. Please re-read the posts I have made.

  118. Lee Russell says:

Vinny Siracusa why don't you go research for a link instead of being lazy about it? if you really wanted the information you wouldn''t ask me about it, you would go search for it instead.
of course carthage was known for greek same buildings because carthage was a colony of people from old greece. but what does buildings gotta do with air condition? you telling me you can surivive in just a house with no air condition when the tempture is above 88? because last time white folks did that they started dying and that was in France and Germany, had hot summer once and europeans weren't prepared and alot of 'em died from heat strokes WHILE IN THEIR HOUSES. yet you want us to believe white folks survive in north africa when there was no air condition.
Phoenician are African people. do you even know what a Jew is? white jews are related to Albinos from Urkine Russia. plus jews ain't people, it's a religion. that be like saying all christians are asians. Oldest evidence of artifacts show greeks, Italians were black people. there is no proof that white people ever ruled ancient rome or greece or ancient Africa, earliest we see white people takin' charge was the Turks when Attlis the Hun was chasin' crazy white folks outta asia.

    all you brought was farts.

  119. Dondi Smith Have you lived in the arab world? I have. Noone in this world hate black ppl more than arabs and dark skin Indians.

  120. Jr Ushanga says:

We are AFRIKANS, "Le noir n'est pas UNE COULEUR, le noir c'est LA LUMIÈRE"-Pierre Soulage. NOUS SOMMES LA LUMIÈRE !

  121. Egyptians are Africans , aren't they?

  122. Kahlid A A; You should know the answer by now. Ancient Egypt is African no question about that but today's Egypt population is mixed it's the amalgamation of Turkish, Syrians, Arabs, Africans, Romans, Greeks, British, etc…. From historical point of view.

  123. haile Selassie was an imposter and a murderer of his brother who was the heirs to the throne. haile Selassie had oppressed his own people and befriended Italian war lord mousalini who then turned against him. haili selasse died a horrible death, buried alive in a mud hut.

  124. latecia gomez's excerpt on Christian his-story from biblical mindset.

  125. general auyedid of Somalia hand Americas as to them with some 16 years old kids. that humiliating to the point that the red necked suckers can't get over it.

  126. from most of the comments I've read, seems fair to say that even black people are as racists as any other race. I am 100% certain that most of us would rather not live under a black leader.

  127. I'm Haitian. You forgot Emperor Jean Jacques Dessalines. Toussaint started the war, he was a tactician/politician but he was ultimately betrayed by Bonapartes who was jealous of him and demanded the return of slavery. True story. So Dessalines who was a general under Toussaint and his right arm along with Petion and Christophe, realized that the french white men were liars and decided to anihilate them once and for all. He succeeded and declare the independance of Haiti. Dessalines became the first president of Haiti and later became the first Emperor of Haiti. In terms of personality, Toussaint was more like MLK and Dessalines more like Malcom X.

  128. Pat Aidee says:

Dessalines became Malcom X after Toussaint was betrayed by the French.

  129. Pat Aidee says:

After spending more time to learn about Malcolm XX over the past couple days, I will no longer compare him to Jean-Jacques Dessalines. Malcolm was a political strategist and visionary. He was another Toussaint L'overture with a self-defense message. Many of his predictions came to past and his speeches sound as if they were held couple months during the Ferguson trial. Although, Haitian historians have drawn a linear comparison between Dessalines and Malcolm X while growing up in Haiti, I now disagree..

  130. Kenneth Lowe says:

Shaka Zulu never fought against Europeans.

  131. Safia Luul says:

Said mohamed Abdalla hassan( mad Mullah nicknamed by the British) fought against 3 European powers in Somalia for 25 years making Africas longest colonial war from 1885-1920 untill he was bombed by British royal airforce in his headquarters Taleh in 1920 in northern Somalia. this man and his army ( dervish army ) is remembered very well for in both British and Somali history for defeating British twice untill they used airtrikes which wasnt even common at time to defeat him.

  132. they would never allow muslims to match forces with them because of their cowardice.

  133. They skipped right over Hailey Selassie! I don't see how you can forget him!

  134. Brother don't U ever even think of diminishing the unsurpassable worldly achievements of my great, great, great grand father.

  135. They all stand on General Toussaint Louverture and Empereur J.J.Dessalines' shoulders. All of them.

  136. this is not wonderful African heroes I know one King his is deafted European forces minilk the 2nd of Ethiopian king THE BATTLE OF ADAW

  137. My favorite Haitian hero, is capois lamort, man avancer boulette c poussiere. Bagay maleur, Hatian people are warrior, they won't die alone or without their murderer, they would say you kill me or I kill you the conclusion is we will die together. African brothers and sisters need to wake up, we can do it. The abolition of everything about slavary would have been better, Hatian did it, we may be poor but we're free. Haitian for life

  138. .Don't forget about Nat Turner!

  139. who the heaven sold you that nonsence

  140. Kenneth Lowe says:

Ok then, show us where he did.

  141. In all the arab sources, ara described themselves as white, they just a little bit mixed with ethiopian long time after Islam . Bilal was known tfor being a black slave, it is very known. However, there were some black afrcan from Ethipia, but most of the arabs from Quraish were whit e or tanned.

Jsut read the sources. I don't know how can you say this…

  142. In North Africa, they have always been white or a little bit tanned. Those on the pictures are from the south, and some black you can see are from the Black Guard, who has been destroyed ans members in majority killed after.

It is very known, Sahara is a natural border, climate of North Africa is like in Europe. Many DNA evidences do exist, and many sources too. Then, even Carthagininian are from the east and absolutely not black. However it existed black population, until now, but this is a small minority: but they're North African and we are proud of it.
