Viola Davis Teams Up With Safeway Foundation to Raise Awareness of Childhood Hunger

ViolaDavisViola Davis is an accomplished award-winning actress with stage, television and screen credits to her name. Now she’s using that star power to raise awareness and help end childhood hunger. And she’s sharing a very personal story.

Davis is teaming up with The Safeway Foundation and the Entertainment Industry Foundation in a yearlong effort to help kids around the country through the “Hunger Is” campaign. In a new public service announcement, Davis tells us that 1 in 5 children go to school hungry every day.

In the short video, Davis, Academy Award-nominated for her roles in “Doubt” and “The Help,” also reveals that she was one of those children who didn’t have enough food when she was growing up.

“I was one of the nearly 17 million kids in the United States who worry where their next meal will come from,” Davis says in the PSA.

She also points out that there are children everywhere going hungry, and some of them may be living near you.

“Children in your neighborhood are suffering, but hunger is not always easy to see,” she says.

Safeway shoppers can help by donating to the campaign at any of the 1,300 stores across the country during the month of April. Or you can go online to contribute at HungerIs.org.
