Kelly Rowland was a fixture at New York Fashion Week Fall 2014, showing off her newly cropped hair and making headlines for her bold, sartorial choices. The R&B singer, who got engaged to her manager Tim Witherspoon in December, has been particularly busy as of late, making appearances on the fashion circuit, planning for her upcoming nuptials and scheming the next step in her music career.
Black Voices caught up with Rowland last week at New York City’s 24-Hour Fitness gym in SoHo, where she was promoting Zumba’s latest fitness program, Zumba Step. The 33-year-old Destiny’s Child alum gave Black Voices the scoop on her favorite collections from Fashion Week, her plans for her wedding dress and her thoughts on “Scandal” star Kerry Washington.
You’ve been turning heads at Fashion Week in New York. Which collections did you love?
Public School, Cushnie et Ochs and Juan Carlos Obando, which was so beautiful. The way the fabric just fluttered while the ladies walked, it was just nothing short of … I was just slobbering. It was so gorgeous. I took pictures of everything, I’m like, “Please, please, I want it!”
You’ve been vocal about your pride in your complexion in the past, how are you feeling about how women of color are being portrayed in the industry?
You know what, I think that the more we continue to support when each other’s lights are shining, then that’s when actually we get more women of color to get their shine. I noticed that yesterday when I went to “The View” and was with Sherri Shepherd. As women of color, we have to continue to support each other. All women. Not just women of color, but all women. When we continue to support each other and not feel some type of way behind it — no jealousy, no ill-feelings — it makes us rise higher as women, because we’re just excited for each other. The stronger each other is, the stronger we are as a unit.
Who are you a fan of these days in fashion and entertainment?
Kerry! All hail, Kerry Washington! And Lupita. She was beautiful, absolutely incredible in “12 Years A Slave.” I’m also really enjoying “American Horror Story: Coven” with Angela Bassett. Her character is amazing. Now, when they start talking in different languages, I press the TV on mute and start praying.
Have you thought about your wedding dress at all?
I have not. I haven’t! That’s a shame. I’m too busy to think about a wedding dress, but whatever it is, I want it to be form-fitted.
