Black Male Anger At Scandal: The Real Deal
    By Reena Walker

Shonda Rhimes was a single black mother of an adopted child that made it her determination to be number one on TV. She created Grey's Anatomy, Private Practice and now Scandal. She is one of the few black women who can get a project made at a major television network. She has given lots of work to black people and featured them in all sorts of non-traditional roles in her shows and not once have you seen a black man wearing a dress in any of her productions. She doesn't resort to the minstrel stuff and her characters are complex. I doubt very seriously that anyone who has watched Scandal would say that the character of Olivia Pope isn't complex and unique. If all you can see is the color of whom she is sleeping with on the show and his political party then you aren't watching nor are you looking at the shows character development.

I really think it is wholly unfair, the way black men are coming down on this show without really knowing what is going on with this character or looking at their own track record. It is, in actuality, being taken as a slap in the face to those black men, who more often than not refer to black women as "our women", not because they are tremendously concerned about the well-being of black women and the damage that negative images of black women cause. Rather, they are mostly upset because Olivia Pope's character is independent, has her own desires and career, makes her own choices, runs her own firm and is not beholden to any man and most importantly, is in charge of and controls her own sexuality. She is therefore not a possession of black men nor is she a black woman they can own or claim and this upsets the antiquated notions these black men have of black women as property.

Anyone who watches the show knows that the president is actually the one who is obsessed with her and was willing to give up the presidency just to be with her because he loves her and he can't stand his wife. They also know that the president and his wife are going through the motions for the public and never have really been in love. The story line and Olivia's character are varied and complex so these men really aren't even watching nor are they informed if they are drawing such narrow conclusions.

It is beyond disingenuous for any black man to be upset about this show yet totally disregard their own behavior. The contrast in their doing so with their being deafeningly silent about the rampant amount of videos, films, music videos, pornography, magazines, comedic routines, You Tube videos, internet memes, radio shows, rap lyrics and theatrical productions that black men have scripted, conceived, created, produced, distributed, promoted and starred in is glaringly hypocritical. Their content advocates violence against black women and is demeaning, degrading, objectifying, hyper-sexualizing, stereotyping and dramatizing black women in a horrendous light and is, to say the least, unseemly. The physical, psychological, emotional and social damage to black women as a result of these images is incalculable and black men are at the helm.

There is therefore, really nothing any of them can say as the vast majority of black men have not stood up in the fight against this sexist onslaught. They now, hypocritically, stand in protest of Scandal only because they aren't the ones who are in charge of the production and a black man or men is not in control of Olivia Pope's character or her character's sexuality. A black woman is. It is therefore unreasonable and unfair for any black man to stand in opposition unless and until they take a pronounced and principled stance against the rampant, misogynistic and destructive media content black men have been producing for at least the last thirty years and are just as vocal about it. Nor can they speak about black genocide or anything else in that realm when it comes to black women and choice, as they are not, for the most part, adopting the black children that are already here as Shonda Rhimes did. Unless and until they take action in these and many other areas, they really don't have a leg to stand on when it comes to critiquing this show or in any conversation about it or the behavior of black women.

A disproportionate amount of venom is directed at black women for things that are not their fault. The lack of understanding and an effort made to distort the specific history and struggles of black women is part of the reason for this. The other part of this stems from the demeaning and degrading and stereotypical images of black women that have been constantly churned out by mostly black men. Therefore the black men who are supposedly so concerned cannot be viewed as genuine as THEY HAVE DONE ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO END IT. This is why at this point in time and I will say it as plainly as possible so they can get the point:

    1. BLACK MEN ARE NOT IN A POSITION TO CRITIQUE ANYTHING THAT BLACK WOMEN DO. YOU HAVE NOT EARNED THAT RIGHT. UNTIL YOU TAKE A SERIOUS STANCE AND ARE AS LOUD AND VOCAL ABOUT THE RAMPANT MISOGYNISTIC, HYPER-SEXUALIZED, DEGRADING, DEMEANING AND OPPRESSIVE MEDIA IMAGES AND HISTORICAL INACCURACIES GENERATED BY BLACK MEN IN THE PAST THIRTY YEARS ABOUT BLACK WOMEN AS YOU HAVE BEEN IN THE PAST FEW WEEKS ABOUT SCANDAL, YOU ARE NOT GOING TO BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY.

    2. YOU HAVE NOT SHOWN YOURSELF TO BE IN THE LEAST BIT CONCERNED ABOUT THE WELL BEING OF BLACK WOMEN AS A GROUP. YOU ARE ONLY CONCERNED WITH YOUR CONTROL OVER BLACK WOMEN AND THEIR SEXUALITY. THIS IS QUITE CLEAR FROM THE DISTORTED HISTORY OF BLACK WOMEN YOU CONSISTENTLY POST, THE LIES ABOUT BLACK WOMEN'S MOVEMENTS YOU SPREAD AND THE CONSTANT STEREOTYPES YOU CREATE. UNLESS AND UNTIL YOU CORRECT THIS AND TAKE A PRINCIPLED, COMPREHENSIVE AND VOCAL STANCE AGAINST THIS BEHAVIOR, NO BLACK WOMAN HAS TO TAKE ANYTHING YOU SAY SERIOUSLY REGARDING WHAT SHE SHOULD BE DOING NOR ARE YOU IN A POSITION TO CRITIQUE BLACK WOMEN ON VIEWING HABITS, WEAVES, CAREER CHOICES, DATING, REPRODUCTIVE CHOICE, PARENTING, POLITICS OR ANY OTHER AREA. PERIOD.

    3. IN ORDER TO BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY, YOU AS BLACK MEN HAVE TO STOP WHINING AND LOOK AT YOURSELVES AND YOUR LACK OF GENUINE ACTIVISM AND ACTION IN THESE AREAS AND YOUR ABSENCE IN THE DEFENSE OF THE BLACK COMMUNITY, WOMEN AND CHILDREN. WE DO NOT BELONG TO YOU AS A GROUP OR INDIVIDUALLY UNLESS WE CHOOSE TO ON AN INDIVIDUAL BASIS AND THAT IS A CHOICE THAT CAN BE MADE ONLY BY EACH INDIVIDUAL WOMAN THROUGH HER OWN DEFINITION. YOU DO NOT HAVE A DIVINE RIGHT TO RULE OVER BLACK WOMEN BASED ON YOUR GENDER OR YOUR RELIGIOUS, FANTASY-BASED, PATRIARCHAL, AND YOUR (FALSELY) SO-CALLED PAN AFRICANIST NOTIONS. BLACK WOMEN AS INDIVIDUALS, ARE ABLE TO CHOOSE AND DECIDE FOR THEMSELVES WHAT THEY WANT FOR THEIR OWN LIVES AND YOU ARE NOT IN A POSITION TO SAY ANYTHING ABOUT IT OR TO JUDGE. WE THEREFORE DO NOT HAVE TO ACCEPT JUST ANYTHING FROM YOU INCLUDING YOUR MISOGYNISTIC BEHAVIOR, ABUSIVE ACTIONS OR YOUR IRRESPONSIBILITY JUST BECAUSE YOU ARE BLACK MEN OR BECAUSE YOU SUFFER OPPRESSION FROM WHITE PEOPLE.

    4. UNLESS AND UNTIL YOU ACTUALLY STOP POINTING FINGERS AND BLAMING THE ILLS OF THE WORLD ON BLACK WOMEN AND GET RID OF YOUR OPPRESSIVE, PATRIARCHAL NOTIONS OF HOW BLACK WOMEN SHOULD BE AND UNLESS YOU START TO ACTUALLY DO SOMETHING ABOUT THE NEGATIVE AND DEGRADING IMAGES AND STEREOTYPES, LIES AND HISTORICAL DISTORTIONS BLACK WOMEN ARE BARRAGED WITH CONSTANTLY AND THE VIOLENCE AND ABUSE BLACK WOMEN FACE AS A RESULT, YOU SHOULD REMAIN QUIET AND FOCUSED ON THE TASK AT HAND AND START TO ORGANIZE AND SHOW YOUR GENUINE CONCERN ABOUT THE ISSUES WE FACE. AT THIS POINT YOU HAVE BEEN ABSENT. PLEASE GET BACK TO US WHEN YOU ACTUALLY BEGIN TO DO SO. WE WILL CONTINUE TO WAIT.

  2. If tha writer of scandal is a black women why isn;t tha president black ?isnt obama tha prez rite now ?

  3. Karlene Chance says:

If the cast was as you say on page 3 with the white mistress and the Black president & Black First Lady white women wouldn't be watching. You have to teach overly educated Black women why not to watch shows like "Scandal." I NEVER watched the show, but I've seen the trailer during commercial breaks and see the nonsense & hypocrisy for what it is. This is a dumb wench story all dressed up!
