The Internet has done lots to revolutionize many new industries and disrupt a lot of traditional ones. The music industry has been particularly affected by this revolution, but one place the consumption of music has remained relatively the same is inside vehicles. However that may be set to change as electric car manufacturer Tesla is tapping AT&T to bring cellular connections to their cars. According to cnet.com:

“The upstart automaker has partnered with AT&T to bring a 3G or HSPA+ (what AT&T calls 4G) connection to its electric cars. With a modem and SIM card, the cars will be able to share performance data, allowing for better remote diagnostic and maintenance, while passengers have the option to browse the Internet, watch videos, or get real-time traffic info via the connection.

“AT&T had previously supplied the Model S with a cellular connection, but that was largely for ‘infotainment’ purposes. Tesla plans to do more with the connection down the line.”

This kind of implementation of technology can have more implications than just diagnostics and performance analytics. If cars begin to come equipped with built in Internet that is easily integrated for the consumer, then this could change the way content is consumed in cars.

Tesla has already proven to be quite innovative by producing a viable line of electric cars. Now let’s see if they can be innovate with their features as well.
