When Google launched its Chromecast TV streaming device a few months back, it created buzz because it was the first easy-to-use TV product from the company, costing only $35. However, one of the drawbacks of Chromecast is the lack of video applications. If it is going to compete with Apple TV, which has apps like Netflix, HBO Go, and ESPN among many others, Google will need to add major apps quickly. Today they’re on the right track, announcing an application for popular video streaming service Hulu Plus. As reported by engadget.com:
“Launching in July with Netflix and YouTube mirroring, Google’s $35 Chromecast streaming dongle now has another video streaming service adding supporting the platform to its apps: Hulu. From today, Hulu will provide Chromecast streaming inside its Hulu Plus app, mirroring shows like New Girl and Modern Family on the big screen. Unlike Netflix, which allows subscribers to stream video from Chrome and its official apps, Hulu originally supported Chromecast via its tab casting feature. Today’s extension will see a Cast button added to Hulu’s iPad and Android apps (with iPhone support “coming very soon”).”
This is a win of both Hulu and Google, as Google gets to provide its users with a better experience and Hulu, of course, gets to grow its user base. According to Hulu’s blog post:
“At Hulu, we are always thinking of new ways to make watching TV a more delightful and convenient experience for our users. The Hulu Plus app on Chromecast does just that, and we are very excited to announce its arrival today.”
Google had already announced that it was “actively working” with other content providers to bring more big name applications to the Chromecast platform, so users can expect to see more in the near future.
At $35 apiece, the Chromecast flew off shelves quickly. Although there are no official sales numbers as of the time of this writing, the Chromecast was sold out upon its release, but now it is available again in the Google Play store, Amazon and Best Buy. With such a low price and apps like Hulu coming to the platform, the Chromecast could easily become a hot item for the holiday season.
