Nigerian Hairstyles Captured in Black and White Photographs

beauty 2The transfer of many cultural aspects from the Diaspora are dumbfounding. Even though the descendants of Africa maybe separated by time and physical distance, there are still indications of cultural bonds. One way we’re connected is by the styling of our hair as portrayed in the work of J.D. Okhai Ojeikere.

The Nigerian photographer began documenting the hairstyles of women in his country in 1968 as a member of the Nigeria Art Council. Decades later, his work of 1,000 different hairstyles is now exhibited in the “Hairstyles” series at the 55th International Art Exhibition La Biennale di Venezia in Venice. It will be on display until Nov. 24.

We found a strong sense of continuity in these photos as versions of these styles are worn by African- American women and girls even today.
