US Open: Williams Sisters Struggle But Rally to Win 1st Round in Doubles

Venus and Serena Williams got off to a slow start in the U.S. Open women’s doubles tournament but rallied from a set down to win their first-round match.

Venus, who was eliminated in singles in the second round, managed along with Serena, to beat Spaniards Silvia Soler-Espinosa and Carla Suarez Navarro 6-7 (5), 6-0, 6-3 on Thursday at Louis Armstrong Stadium.

Serena cruised through her second-round singles match earlier in the day, beating Galina Voskoboeva 6-3, 6-0. Venus fell short in singles play to China’s Zheng Jie 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (5) on Wednesday.

The sisters have won an impressive 13 Grand Slam doubles titles together. They are unseeded at Flushing Meadows because they didn’t play together in earlier French Open and Wimbledon tournaments this year.
