Serena Williams’ US Open Match Postponed by Rain

Serena Williams got a day off from the tennis court at the U.S. Open as intermittent rain delayed her match Wednesday.

Serena Williams – After an on-and-off rainy day at Flushing Meadows, tournament officials decided to postpone Serena’s second-round match against Galina Voskoboeva, along with seven other women’s singles matches.

Venus Williams actually played her match, which was also subject to a pair of rain delays that ate up about four hours. Venus lost the match to Zheng Jie of China, who knocked off the two-time champion 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (7-5).

Tournament officials postponed all the other second-round women’s matches that hadn’t started before the rain, except one between Jamie Hampton and Kristina Mladenovic. They wanted to keep on the winner of that match on the same schedule as the winner between Sloan Stephens and Urszula Radwanska.

In addition to Serena Williams, No. 8 seed Angelique Kerber, No. 9 Jelena Jankovic and No. 25 Kaia Kanepi also got a day off from the tournament.
