The 2013 MTV Video Music Awards took place for the first time at the newly opened Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Sunday night. The evening promised performances from Kanye West to Miley Cyrus. There were also surprise appearances from R&B groups Danity Kane and TLC. But the show truly began on the red carpet.
The red carpet looks at the VMAs fluctuated between extreme glamour – perhaps too much for the awards show – to underwhelming. On the other hand, some celebs managed to find the right balance.
Understated:

Over-the-top-glamour
While Rita Ora looked gorgeous in this Alex Vauthier gown with a train, it was hard to tell if she mixed up her dates for the Oscars or even the Met Gala.
Ciara was also stunning in this Givenchy couture piece that Beyonce actually wore to the last Met Gala.
Too Much Skin?
Danity Kane confirmed their reunion, minus original member D. Woods, in well-coordinated black and white looks. The members include Aubrey O’Day, Shannon Bex, Aundrea Fimbres and Dawn Richards
In all fairness, this is probably the most clothes Miley Cyrus has had on in months. The former Disney star went for an 1980s theme in this Dolce and Gabbana two-piece.
T-Boz and Chili of TLC made a welcomed return to the VMAs
Just right:
Who knew the 21-year old Disney star would be the one to get it just right? Selena Gomez was absolutely stunning in this sexy Versace gown. Gomez, who is transitioning from a wholesome Disney star to a mature woman, gave just enough to her fans who are torn over her new image.
