Solange Knowles, the younger sister of superstar Beyonce Knowles, has yet to reach a place where her name isn’t closely followed by her sister, but perhaps she’s heading there. Widely considered the more stylish sister, Solange has managed to carve out a unique style and sound that will soon separate her from big sis Beyonce.
In an interview with luxury fashion site Net-A-Porter’s digital magazine, “The Edit“, Solange revealed that creating her own image wasn’t something she plotted.
“I don’t think any part of myself as an artist has ever had a moment of…intentional execution. It’s all just been an evolution. I’ve been able to watch such an incredible performer as my sister close-up. It’s molded me. And now I’m letting my son watch me.”
Despite having two big-time performers at her disposal – Beyonce and her hubby Jay Z, the 27-year old entertainer doesn’t look to them for advice. This past June, Solange performed for the first time at the mega annual Glastonbury festival held in the U.K. When asked if she looked for tips from Beyonce or Jay Z – who both had memorable performances at the festivals – she replied:
“You know, we actually never even talked about it. But both of them had such incredible, iconic Glastonbury performances – I was really proud of them. And I thought that Jay opening with [Oasis’ song] Wonderwall was pretty kick-ass!”
Of the experience she added,
“It’s a really unique environment. Everyone was so incredibly spirited and happy to be there. After my show I went from stage to stage, and ended up listening to music until 3 a.m. Everyone let me do my thing. They acknowledged me but never interrupted my experience, which I really appreciated.”
Solange closed the interview reflecting on the importance of individuality
“Style in anything is very important. It’s how we express our individuality, who we are and what we believe in. It’s all a reflection of who I am.”
