The song, which Nelly says he and Pharrell recorded about a year ago, has a classic Neptunes sound. With a combination of stripped-down beat and the black and white visuals, you can’t help recalling Pharrell’s similar performance on Snoop Dogg’s ‘Drop It Like It’s Hot.’
As the St. Louis rapper told MTV: “Actually, me and Pharrell did the record maybe about a year ago and we were coming back to the records that we did, closing out the album and putting everything together and I was just like, ‘Yo, I think Nicki might be dope on this’…We made it happen and I was right. She killed it!”
Nicki definitely killed it, both on the song and video. Her appearance in the video and adds an energy that only she can.
According to complex.com:
“Nicki’s got her signature Beats by Dre Pink Pill out in full display in the video, along with some toilet paper made out of money. She kills her verse after kicking her shoes off, too.”
It’s been a feel good week for Nelly. He was the headliner at Roverfest 2013 and he surprised the crowd by inviting kidnap victim Amanda Berry onto the stage for part of his performance.
The video is a hit, not signaling that Nelly is back, but solidifying Pharrell’s resurgence into the spotlight. The Virginia producer has also been hot this summer.
Robin Thicke’s Blurred Lines, which Pharrell produced, has been breaking records on the charts, and Skateboard P was a prominent feature on Jay Z’s Magna Carta Holy Grail.
