Sanchez threw the first interception at training camp Monday during the 11-on-11 drills. He threw a pass behind the receiver straight to the linebacker Josh Mauga. The crowd watching reacted with boos.
Sanchez also threw a couple of interceptions in other drills. One came during one-on-one’s Monday, and another in seven-on-seven. In contrast, Smith hasn’t thrown any interceptions which sources say coach Rex Ryan has noted publicly.
“I think he can throw the football, there’s no doubt. He’s accurate with the football,” said Ryan. “I think the big thing for him now . . . like he took a couple of sacks today, instead we got to get rid of the ball. Like don’t throw the picks, but obviously we got to get rid of it. If it’s not there, we don’t want to be taking sacks. So I think that’s something where he can improve his game, but I have been impressed with the fact that he has not thrown a pick and that’s certainly a real positive thing.”
