The Weinstein Co. Gets ‘Lee Daniels’ The Butler’ as Official Title to Film

The Weinstein Company lost its bid to use the title The Butler‘ for its upcoming Lee Daniels-directed movie. However, the Motion Pictures Association of America said on Friday that its original ruling in the case went too far, and it has overturned the part of the decision that prohibited the Weinstein Co. from using the word “butler” in the title of its historical drama.

The Weinstein Co. can re-title the film, “Lee Daniels’ The Butler,” and  it will.

The MPAA’s first ruling stated that The Weinstein Co. could not use the title “The Butler” or any variation title.

According to Friday’s appeals ruling, The Weinstein Co. can now call the movie “Lee Daniels’ The Butler.”

This “clearly a pretty big victory for us,” said Dani Weinstein, a spokesman for the company. “Our biggest concern had been that we wouldn’t be able to use the words ‘the butler’ at all.”
