It’s a strange age we’re living in, where fan fiction can become legit fiction, and then become cinema. Fifty Shades of Grey infamously started out as Twilight fanfic, but Cassandra Clare, author of the Mortal Instruments series, also began writing in another author’s world. She did Harry Potter fanfic before making an, um, “original” work.
In the series’ first book, the #1 New York Times bestseller “The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones,” set in contemporary New York City, a seemingly ordinary teenager, Clary Fray, discovers she is the descendant of a line of Shadowhunters, a secret cadre of young half-angel warriors locked in an ancient battle to protect our world from demons. After the disappearance of her mother, Clary must join forces with a group of Shadowhunters, who introduce her to a dangerous alternate New York called Downworld, filled with demons, warlocks, vampires, werewolves and other deadly creatures.
A main character with a name suspiciously similar to the author’s? You got yourself fanfic right there.
Lily Collins plays Clary, while Jame Campbell Bower plays her hawt young guide through this new magical world / love interest I’m assuming. One of the rest of the cast is probably a competing love interest, because these things usually have love triangles. I dunno, I never read these books. Why would I? Clary.
The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones comes out August 23rd. This is the trailer:
