Beyonce Urges Supreme Court to "Put a Ring on It" in Support of Marriage Equality

Last night, as the country anxiously awaited the Supreme Court’s decision on Prop 8, the bill that banded gay marriage in California, Beyonce took to Facebook to voice her support of marriage equality.

The singer posted one of her signature handwritten notes, which read “If you like it you should be able to put a ring on it,” alluding to her 2009 smash single “Single Ladies.”  The note was captioned with “#WeWillUniteForMarriageEquality.”

Beyonce’s statement echoed the words of husband Jay-Z, who affirmed President Barack Obama’s support of gay marriage, saying it was “the right thing to do.” The Supreme Court is evaluating two cases this week that pertain to LGBT rights, Prop 8 and the Defense of Marriage Act (1996), which prevents legally married gay couples from collecting federal benefits.

In addition to marriage equality, the “Love on Top” singer will also be lending her support to Chime for Change, an organization devoted to empowering women around the world. Beyonce will headline the organization’s fundraising concert June 1 at London’s Twickenham Stadium. Rita Ora, Florence + the Machine, Ellie Goulding, and John Legend will also be featured in the lineup.

When she’s not campaigning for good, Beyonce has also found the time to lend her voice to a children’s movie, Epic, an action adventure based on the children’s book The Leaf Men and the Brave Good Bugs by William Joyce.  Beyonce will voice Queen Tara, a mother-nature figure who is queen of the forest.

Beyonce revealed in a teaser trailer: “What I like most about Tara is that she sets a great example for the people that she protects. The film is about how everything in our life connects.”

Confirming what we already knew, Beyonce also admitted she couldn’t pass up the role because “I always wanted to be a queen.”

Beyonce offered a few more details on the animated feature, “Everything in this movie is big – the characters, the action, this is one time where the film really lives up its title,” she said.

Epic also features the voices of Josh Hutcherson and Colin Farrell and is scheduled for release in May.
