'Identity Thief' Beats 'Snitch' For Top Box Office Spot

The Rock, starring in his crime thriller Snitch didn’t prove solid to take over the box office this weekend. Well, actually, it was on top at first but succumb to Universal’s comedy Identity Thief as it regained the top spot.

Identity Thief was propelled back to number one with a $14.1 million bump Saturday. That now brings the films total gross to a hefty $93.7 million in only three weeks. So far, Identity Thief is the highest grossing film of 2013, just beating out Django Unchained. That’s really good news for film stars Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy, who may get a sequel out of this deal.

Snitch opened to a puny $4.14 million on Friday, which was better than The Rocks’ latest film Faster, but it just wasn’t good enough to hold back Identity Thief. Earning just $1 million less than the film at $13 million, averaging $5,177 at all the 2,511 theaters it was showing in. The film also starred Susan Sarandon, Jon Bernthal, Michael K. Williams, Barry Pepper and Benjamin Bratt.

All in all, this was a very slow couple of weeks for the Box office ticket sales, but that’s all about to change as the spring season kicks in and big budget films like Jack the Giant Slayer hit theaters.
