Doctor Who‘s latest incarnation, Matt Smith, will be taking on the big screen once again in Ryan Gosling’s directorial debut, How to Chatch A Monster.
Variety reports that Matt Smith will be joining the already cast Christina Hendricks and Eva Mendes in the film. Smith’s silver screen experience ranges from the quirky sci-fi drama Womb in 2010 to the rowing drama Bert & Dickie last year. Of course, his work on Dr. Who for the past three seasons has fanboys and fangirls alike chomping at the bit for more Matt Smith. Ryan Gosling is set to oblige them.
How to Catch a Monster seems to be a sci-fi film of considerable scope. It’s set against the dreamscape of a vanishing city, focusing mainly on a single mother of two being swept into a macabre and dark fantasy underworld. Her teenage son — possibly Matt Smith — discovers a secret road leading to an underwater town. Production will start this spring, so all those unanswered questions you just came up with will in no doubt soon be answered.
Ryan Gosling is, without a doubt, one of the busiest men working in Hollywood today. He starred in three critically acclaimed features in 2011 alone and doesn’t look to be giving up his momentum. Gangster Squad is currently in theaters receiving rave reviews while The Place Beyond the Pines is poised to follow with its debut March 20.
Matt Smith is a good addition for Gosling’s fledgling project. His charisma is already world renowned with his work on Dr. Who and hopefully it will translate well to the big screen. In taking on the role, Matt Smith may even be venturing into new territory, away from the Doctor’s persona of happy-go-lucky intergalactic crime fighting. Of course, this could prove the actor’s range or remind us all why he sticks to playing such a pleasant chap on television.
As said before, production for How to Catch a Monster begins in Spring. Details regarding budgets, deadlines and other actors has yet to be released, but we’ll be sure to update you when the time comes.
