Joseph Fiennes and Morena Baccarin To Star In 'The Unholy'

Joseph Fiennes and Morena Baccarin have been chosen to star in Ross Katz’s supernatural thriller, The Unholy.

The Unholy is inspired by actual scientific research that suggests that the human race might have evil in its genetic code, making some humans preordained for immorality. The Unholy follows the scientists pursuing this theory after they are recruited by the Vatican to examine candidates for exorcisms. Eventually it boils down to a good old fashioned battle of good versus evil and the age old argument of faith versus science.

While Ross Katz is best known for producing Lost In Translation and Marie Antoinette, he’ll be sitting in the directors chair for The Unholy. His past directing credits include the HBO movie Taking Chance starring Kevin Bacon.

Joseph Fiennes just wrapped the second season of American Horror Story, where he played the corrupt Monsignor Timothy Howard, opposite Jessica Lange. In 1998, Fiennes starred as Will Shakespeare in the Academy Award winner for Best Picture, Shakespeare In Love.

Morena Baccarin is currently a regular on Showtime’s Emmy and Golden Globe sweeping series, Homeland. She also starred in the ABC series, V, as well as Firefly, another short-lived TV series that gained a cult like following.

The plot sounds chilling, but potentially cheesy if not done correctly. Both Fiennes and Baccarin are hot commodities after being regulars on two award winning TV series, so chances are the actors wouldn’t sign up for some poorly crafted science fiction wannabe thriller. Baccarin has her fair share of sci-fi movie credits, so we know she can play it well. I’m excited for Fiennes back on the big screen after his recent stints on television, although no role can top his part as the debonair playwright in Shakespeare In Love.

As seen on The Hollywood Reporterfilming for The Unholy is set to begin this spring.
