Here is the bad news: You’re probably never going to own a private island like Richard Branson or Johnny Depp. This is not your fault. This is just how the math works out. Fortunately, there are a number of fantastic and lesser known island resorts around the world that were built for the sole purpose of allowing you to pretend that you own a private island. The best of these, the world’s most relaxing island retreats, are generally a hop off the beaten path and a world away from hectic, modern, day-to-day life. A reservation at these resorts is a ticket out of the ordinary.
Unfortunately, booking an island retreat can be a risky game. If you don’t love the accommodations or the scenery, there is little to be done. In truth, there are also a lot of disappointing resorts out there that offer either luxury without much natural context or scenery accompanied by poor to middling services.
