New International 'Side Effects' Trailer Released

The new psychological thriller from Steven Soderbergh, Side Effects, stars Rooney Mara, Channing Tatum, Jude Law, and Catherine Zeta-Jones. The film follows Emily Taylor (Mara) as she copes with anxiety surrounding her husband’s (Tatum) release from prison. Her psychiatrist (Law) prescribes a new anti-depressant, only to discover it has horrifying and dangerous side effects. Based on the trailer it seems like something more disturbing is afoot than just a wonky new drug.

This is Rooney Mara‘s first big movie since she signed on to play Lisbeth Salander in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo trilogy. She earned an Oscar nominee portraying the waifish, crafty, hothead Lisbeth so I have no doubt she’ll excel in another potentially mentally disturbed role. Channing Tatum seems to be going for something a tad more serious after finishing 2012 as a stripper Magic Mike and earning the title of People Magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive.” Director Steven Soderbergh actually worked with Tatum on the sensational male stripping movie, Magic Mike, but this film is clearly an entirely different beast.

Catherine Zeta-Jones and Soderbergh are no strangers either. This is the third Soderbergh film Zeta-Jones has appeared in, the first being Traffic (2000) followed by Ocean’s 12 (2004). It should come as no surprise that Jude Law also has history with Soderbergh. In 2011, Law appeared in Contagion, another psychological thriller from Soderbergh and Side Effects writer Scott Z. Burns.

As seen on Deadline.comSide Effects will premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival. The film is scheduled to make its stateside debut on February 8th.
